Que pasa?

I was just wondering, what are the good so-called Depeche Mode clones out there? I'm talking about stuff like Camouflage, Red Flag, and Anything Box, which have been branded as Depeche clones during my research on the Internets.

The question popped into my mind as I heard a song by Celebrate The Nun on the Retro-Active channel on Comcast, a band I had never heard before. Lo and behold, a quick Google search later, and the phrase "Depeche Mode doppelganger" immediately sprang up.

Since I obviously enjoy these Synthpop me-toos of the late '80s, I was wondering -- what else do I want in my collection?

(By the by, anyone else with me on the fact that St. Patrick's Day was on Saturday, officially?)

How about Cause And Effect. "You Think You Know Her", I think they were out around 90 with this.

Though not as obvious, I'd probably add Faith Assembly to that list. They definitely have some Mode moments on their albums.

Love that debut Cause & Effect album. I have the original release (not the "Another Minute" reissue), which has the original (and best) version of "You Think You Know Her". Solid synthpop album. Their second one, "Trip" from '94, was just ok.

Love Faith Assembly. Thanks drseverin for turning me on to them. My favorite album of theirs is "Ghosts I Have Been". Yes, there's a Depeche Mode element, but also a Tears for Fears vibe. Definitely worth checking out.

'Ghosts' is definitely their best album. My favorite songs off that one are 'Falling From Grace' and 'Longing'. I've heard short clips of the new album, 'Descent Into Madness', but haven't bought it yet. Hmm, never thought of the TFF vibe; would you say there's some influence from The Hurting in their songs?

I would say the 2 obvious early DM clones would be Yazoo and Erasure.

FEW BOYS - Secret Times (12", Westside Music, 1985) - in the pre-internet days, this was quite often sold/exchanged as unreleased Depeche Mode song...

My favorites from "Ghosts" are "When Anna Speaks" and "Cascade", although the album is a great listen from start to finish. I need to dig up some of their earlier stuff.

Yes, it reminds me a bit of "The Hurting", mainly in the vocals. There's a bit of Spandau Ballet and OMD in there too.

I got turned onto Ampersand via the Outpost. "Traction" sounds like a direct clone of "People are People" right down to the clanging metallic percussion. Still like it, though[:)]

Funny thing about these so-called "Depeche Mode Clones" is that if you listen to them for awhile, they don't really sound like Depeche Mode at all. There's a humungous list of bands like these, such as the bands that have already been mentioned in the replies. A few more just to toss out names would be Elegant Machinery, Kiethevez, De/Vision, etc. You can actually even say that most of the Synthpop scene from the 90's are somewhat Depeche Mode Clones. You're The Answer[Seven Red Seven].....used to be played constantly on WHTG(NJ)back in the day.

Their debut, 'Shelter' came out in '91.
