Depends on which part of 'back in the day' one refers to.

Early 80's - The Police, Squeeze, Blondie
Mid to Late 80's - New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure

Early to mid 80's is what I'm going for....Squeeze huh? I might be crazy but I always detected a slight "country" sound with Difford and Tilbrook. Don't get me wrong, they're a great band but that "country" feel always kept me away. They are in a league of their own cause I can't think of any other band that sounds quite like them.

1985 was the end of the original New Wave sound for me. There may have been a few tunes after but the NW sound became mainstream and I just moved on.

Where I honestly was back in the day, without coloring with hindsight or any revisionism...

The Police
Echo & the Bunnymen

Then a toss-up between X and Sparks (you know, 'cause they were so similar).

Oh, and The Jam, Cars and Pretenders closely after as well...or maybe even before depending on the day. Pretty vanilla.
