Who really belongs on this list? Especially the earlier stuff? There's obvious ones like Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, and Devo. Who are the rest? I'd say it includes:

Pere Ubu
Mission of Burma
X
Human Sexual Response
Wall of Voodoo
Tuff Darts
The Bongos
The Embarrassment
Richard Hell
Dead Boys
Minutemen
Sonic Youth (at least their first s/t ep)
The Cramps
Pylon
Notekillers
The Feelies

How can you put Pylon and The Feelies on that list, but leave R.E.M. off?

It's a good question, but it depends on where you draw the line between, Post-Punk, Punk, and New Wave.

I'll give it some thought.

Attempted humor...likely bad...met with drama. What is this, an internet forum?!

Fair enough. Whether you like R.E.M. or not, they share enough with Pylon & The Feelies (especially R.E.M.'s early stuff) in terms of style and influences that it seems to me that they belong on your list. You could add other alterna-jangle bands like the dB's, Red Rockers, maybe even The Plimsouls...

And if you're putting in Devo, why not The B-52's & Oingo Boingo?

Hmmm, this seems to be the disconnect. I didn't have any notion that I was putting up an authoritative list. It was whatever came to my head at the time. It really is just a genuine question rather than pretention that I'm putting up some master list for my own vanity. Indeed, why not B-52s and Oingo Boingo...complete omissions...and the Cars too, doh!

I was wondering if you left them off for a reason or just hadn't thought of them. Nothing wrong with the latter. Yes, I would add The Cars.

I agree with Scramjets alterna-jangle additions, and would also toss in Translater and Wire Train.

Stayin' outta this one ... it's far too contentious for my tastes.

Funny that I had both those bands in an "American Post-Punk" mix that I gave to an English friend awhile ago. I didn't really know if folks put them in the classic post-funk vein...but I guess at least some folks do.
