There was such a vast quantity of amazing music made back in the day there was no way it could all find airplay on radio or MTV / MuchMusic. Today I am still discovering fantastic music from the late 70's to early 80's that I never heard at the time.

What's your best discovery of something old, but new to you, in 2008?

I've already mentioned this in my quest to find everything, but:

DRINKING ELECTRICITY

and Kuruki, League of Nations, and Ceramic Hello.

All bands that I'd heard mentioned, but could never find at the local "corporate" record stores.

Still looking for my girl with auburn hair and tawny eyes...

Can't think of any bands I've discovered, but I've run across some great songs by some bands with whom I was only slightly familiar:

Red Rockers - Change the World Around (and others)
The Records - So Sorry (can't get enough of this one)

System 56 - from Cleveland! Great band. I was glad they finally released a best-of through CD Baby a couple of years ago. "Life On A Cool Curve" is my favorite song.

I still have Scott/Rubellan to thank for tipping me off to Vivabeat a few years ago.

I never really knew much about Telex until just a couple of years ago.

So true. I've been discovering a lot of classic new wave since I got out of high school (1989). There are a lot of bands that I never knew about, because I was either too young, or just didn't get exposed to them (I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, so there was no 91X or KROQ in my childhood). Perfect example, I didn't discover The Chameleons until 1994..sad but true. It didn't take long after that to collect EVERYTHING by them. They've been one of my favorite bands ever since.

Here's my entry for this year (so far):

New Musik - Warp. I seriously never heard of this band until "A Train On Twisted Tracks" came on my Pandora station back in January. It's one of my 'new' favorite new wave songs. I just recently added Warp and From A to B to my music collection.

I still see Johnny D every couple months at the record Swap Meet

Well, yeah, KQ, but that came around as I was finishing high school. There was no good radio in the early 80's, just pop crap like KZZP and KOPA, so I missed out a lot of early, more obscure new wave. I'm definitely a big KUKQ fan, in-fact my St. Patrick's Day party was all Q music.

yup, and we had to suffer on AM as well! I was at the Big Surf show they talk about, wanted to see Camper Van beethoven really bad and Red Hot Chili Peppers were amazing then.

The Hawks, Laughing Dogs, 4 out of 5 Doctors, Elektrics, Plimsouls _ all excellent and between the five bands I heard exactly three of their songs on the radio back in the day.
"It's All Right, It's OK" _ Hawks; "Some Lovin' Tonight" _ Elektrics and "Million Miles Away" by Plimsouls.
All these bands had much more to offer than just those songs.

Good call on the Xex, Ollie. The first track "Fashion Hurts" automatically rang a bell, as I just heard it last week one of the "Flexipop" compilations from Saltyka's site.
