New Wave Outpost Forum

We all have them. Major dislikes for bands who are widely acclaimed/loved by the masses but we could just never get into them. I'm not talking obscure bands with cult followings, but (relatively) popular NW bands. Also, tell us if there's an exception in a certain song by them that you seem to like (which most often I find is the case).

For starters, here's mine:

- [b]XTC[/b]: Much loved by most New Wavers but I could just never quite put my finger on what I don't like about them. ([b]exception: Senses Working Overtime[/b] - pretty damn catchy "1-2-3-4-5, senses working ooooooooooooooooooooooovertiiiime!" always loved singing along to it [:D])

- [b]Love & Rockets[/b]: Damn ugly music is how I'd explain these guys ([b]exception: Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man)[/b] - insanely catchy! "alcohol is your yooooooooooooooooooooga baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy *insert awesome bass lick* [8D])

- [b]Erasure[/b]: IMO Vince Clarke took the 'pop' side of 'synthpop' a little too far with this one (loved early DM, Yaz). Bring back the bubbly synths, Vince! ([b]exception: Chains of Love[/b] - what can I say? Awesome song.)

- [b]Heaven 17[/b]: OMG, these guys were an ABOMINATION. Some of the worst music I've EVER had the pleasure of listening to. ([b]exception: Let Me Go[/b] - i LOVE this song!)

- [b]The English Beat[/b]: I've never been a major fan of ska, but I know good ska when I hear it (The Specials, Madness). These guys are definitely second rate - weak, anemic, and derivative. ([b]exception: Best Friend[/b] - i just love that hook!)

Alright, that's enough for me. Now it's your turn to expose yourselves! Come on everyone, own up!!

I first heard XTC's Making Plans for Nigel on the K-Tel High Voltage record and I've been a fan ever since. I can't agree on that one for sure!

The one I do agree with is Heaven 17. A few great tracks and a lot of crap.

The one I'd add is Siouxsie. I thought they were all serious goth and gloom before I heard any of their records. Then when I listened to the lyrics I heard drivel like Hong Kong Garden - a song about chinese takeaway? Christine - banana split lady? Spellbound? A crap Beatles cover of Dear Prudence? Vomiticious!

I don't exactly hate the Talking Heads, but I have never cared enough about them to buy a single thing by them--Ever. Not vinyl, cassette, CD, or digital.

THAT's who I've been trying to think of. And yeah, lots of acknowledgment that they're one of the early greats and all, but, meh. Maybe just too much self-aware cleverness for the cynic in me.

Oingo Boingo, Grey Matter is the only song I like

Red Hot Chili Peppers-I like funk rock, just not the way they do it.
Anthony Kiedis irks the shit out of me.

Black Flag- except tv party

Never could understand the hype for Joy Division, or the sound of Pet Shop Boys. PSB music was OK, but the vocals just drive me nuts. Never bought one single thing by them, and their singing makes me cringe. I think New Order had a couple decent songs, but JD, I own nothing and have heard nothing that makes me want to own anything by them. My friend has all their albums, but I just never could find a song that I cared enough to hear again. I know these two artists are popular, just personally of no value to me.

The main ones:

Sparks. I bought Angst In My Pants because of a couple of songs and I like maybe half of the album, but the rest of the album and all of their other stuff does nothing for me.

Next is a band who even though they are in no way, shape or form new wave they seem to get mentioned a lot around here ... the Pet Shop Boys.

The Motels. Yawn.

And finally ... China Crisis. I bought one album (don't even remember which one) and it seemed harmless enough but it was nothing that made me want to hear more. This one I'm willing to give another chance to so if anyone has any recommendations, shoot them my way.

I am so not into the PSBs that they didn't even occur to me as possible response this question (thereby proving Minty's point, I guess).

Depeche Mode - stop the groaning & just kill yourself already. Never understood the facination with them.

Oingo Boingo - what frat boys listen to when they think they're hip

Bronski Beat - Jimmy Sommerville's voice is like a surgical saw cutting through my forehead.

Although I like a handful of their songs, I never really got into Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order or David Bowie.

While I'm at it, I have to confess I never really got into The Clash or The Pretenders until a few years ago. It took me a while to discover what I had missed out on, and I now realize that I missed out on some great music at the time.

Minty, if you're curious about The English Beat, I'd be sure to play the album [b]'I Just Can't Stop It'[/b] ten times in a row before you write them off. IMHO, that recording is better than anything The Specials or Madness ever put out, and I own the output of all of those bands.

i_like_lectric_motors - China Crisis is a decent band, but they fall into that category of bands who have never had a breakout album. They have put out 5 or 6 records, and none of them has more than two or three strong songs. The studio production on the first three sound quite dated today. The best way to get into them is to see them live, but it's probably too late for that. There are a couple of live discs and a live DVD available, but I haven't heard/seen those so I can't vouch for them.

I don't really have a band I could never get into. When I look at my collection I have a couple of things by a great many groups, but a complete discography for maybe 3 or 4 groups. (Not counting one release wonders)

Hell, I even like and own one "The Coloufield" song, but I'm not saying which, for fear that I will be forever mocked.

I do however have a band I should have no business in liking, yet love everything I hear by them; Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. Why is that?
