I remember hearing awhile back about a band from the mid-eighties that incorporated country-western-tinged music with synthesizer technology. Does anyone remember a band like this? If you do, could you drop their name for me. I'm itching to hear what this band sounds like. If it helps, the cover art of one of their albums is red and there's a sort of sci-fi mars/desert landscape on it.

I wonder if you are thinking of Deadeye Dick. They had a couple of minor hits in the early 90's.

Whoaa! It's definitely Wall of Voodoo! Thank you so much!! I can't wait to check this band out. Country-western and synthpop sounds like a strange and wonderful mix. I'll post my thoughts once I've located some of their music and given it some listening time/thought.

Country and Western might be stretching Wall of Voodoo's sound a bit much...sure, Stan does have a nasal like twang to his speak/singing and Marc's guitar style is also twangy but in a spaghetti western style. I would have to say it's more like a Mexican/Italian Western style than country.

You can still get Call of the West (CD) at Amazon pretty cheap but you'll pay big bucks for Dark Continent (CD).

Add to that list Yip Yip Coyote, as well.

Still looking for my girl with auburn hair and tawny eyes...

Stan actually had a stack of Dark Continent CDs at the merch booth on his recent tour, which surprised me, but he's not selling it on his website.

I got one when he was selling them @ CD Baby (quite awhile ago) and from what I could figure out, they were Italian copies that may or may not be legit. I never could get a straight answer from anyone including Stan himself. He just smiled...

I got my copy of Dark Continent from the "Discount Pile" at Musicland, of all places, back in 1992. Paid $8.00 for it back then.

It could be The Rave-Ups, as well. They had some songs that sounded like squaredance music, but it alwys seemed to have a new wavish sound to it.
They liked adding banjo to their music.
