I'm wondering what everyone thinks of new releases that are advertised as limited edition (and numbered) - and if that makes a difference in how fast you'll purchase something.

The ACT box set was advertised as super limited edition but there seem to be pleny of copies still available.

The Rhino Handmade stuff is all limited edition - and some titles have sold out (Rank & File "The Slash Years", Devo "Live", and a few others).

When purchasing for myself, if I know something's limited I try to get it ASAP because i have that fear that the next time I go looking for it - it might not be there.

When pre-purchasing for The Ideal Copy - I try to bring in a lot of copies if it's limited - but the sales patterns don't always indicate that people will snatch something up if it's limited.

The trend right now is for the majors to release a "standard edition" and a "limited edition" (and in some cases a "collectors edition") of a new album (U2, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Morrissey, etc.) Personally I find it ridiculously annoying (and I also prefer a jewel case over any other packaging, but that's another topic).

Anyway, discuss...

I think in some cases, Limited Editions are just that, Limited. The Rhino Handmades are truly limited at 2500 copies each. So I try to scoop them.

Just curious Jason, how many copies of the AFOS "Listen" cd were made? Also, would you know how many copies of the Retro:active cd's were made? Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and the Remix CD.

I like limited edition vinyl, but so very few labels still produce LPs. I realise the economics prohibit most labels from doing vinyl and cd releases, but I would rather pay $18 for an album than a cd.
