Out of curiosity I typed in www.wlir.com and was actually brought to a site. I believe it was just the title page and the frequency was for 107.1. There was a link to a streaming site, but this 'LIR had no streaming.

Why is there a site at all for the station? And why is there a station called WDRE that was streaming dance music?

I wouldn't mind some clarity either. Here on the CT shore, we used to get the reincarnation of LIR out of the North Fork on 107.1 for the last few years. They played as decent a mix of new and old one could have hoped for off the radio, certainly compared to any CT drek. One day a few months ago, it just disappeared, and now the airwaves have been thrown back to drek-only.

WDRE took over the frequency 92.7 and employed several of the DJ's after WLIR's demise. They started off playing a similar brand of music but eventually drifted towards adult contemporary with some new wave mixed in. They eventually lost 92.7 to a spanish language format. That was years ago. I could never pick up 107.1 near me.


We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

I was curious too, so I started doing a little digging to find out.....from what I understand, 'LIR is no longer, even on the east end on 107.1...I think they turned 107.1 into an ESPN talk radio station. So sad that 'LIR is gone...[:(]

Actually, the owners, Jarad Broadcasting, sold the station to finance the son's (Jed Morey) failed run for mayor of Great Neck, LI. Jed was a young guy whose dad let him run the station in his late 20s. Nice guy, but that's when the station continued the death rattle and went trance/hot ac/pop. (Though I'd still take them back vs what else is out there.) A generation's icon sold out for (failed) political ambition.

Thanks. I know what transpired in Dec '87, but it's what's happening now that I was curious about. The station is dead, as far as we're all concerned, and there doesn't seem to be any hope for any kind of a resurrection.

Sheesh. I tell ya, if I had the resources, I'd start my own station and have some sort of tribute to 'LIR in the business somewhere somehow. There are lots of contemporary bands out there that'd fit the "new music" or "alternative" bill.

I can help clarify....
Jarad (also called TM0 radio) sold the 92.7 frequency (as stated so interestingly in a previous post) and moved WLIR out East to the Hamptons. They broadcast WLIR at 107.1 for a number of years. They also picked up 105.3 in the same area and made it a dance format with the WDRE calls.
Neither station came close to the broadcast area of the original location at 92.7.

Party105.3 (WDRE) is still going strong on the East end of Long Island and simulcasts into Nassau county with a small transmitter at 101.5.

"The World Famous WLIR" changed format at the turn of the 2008 new year and started simulcasting ESPN Sports Radio (same as 1050AM I believe). It's a multi-year deal so I doubt an alternative song will ever come out of that transmitter again. BTW, I think they kept the WLIR call letters but it's only mentioned during the mandatory hourly station ID.

It's strange that they still have a "link to nowhere". And the stream was lousy when they used to have one; nothing lost or missed there.

So....in summary, WLIR is no more.

The it sounds like what the NY tristate area needs is a version of L.A.'s Indie 103 (103.1 FM). It plays all sorts of stuff, some of it a little ridiculous (country, reggae). But some of it has been great. I've heard some new alternative bands that would've been right at home on WLIR in the mid-80s as well as classic 'wave stuff. In terms of music, it may be the most listenable in the country for me out of all the ones I know about to date. I mean, it's not LIR. Or even the old KROQ. But it gives you a reason to turn on the radio sometimes.

I love Steve Jones' show on Indie...pull it up on the Internet from time to time. Really wish Sirius would make a deal to simulcast him, so it's easier to hear.
