So let's get out there and make sure Joy Division triumphs over Madonna (see what I mean?) and that OMD beats out Kajagoogoo (not that I'm biased or anything). [;)]

I thought this was a single-song vote, where you plug in your own. Perhaps my favorite song from that decade was/is Section 25's 12" remix of "Bad News Week". Man that song was wild. Close behind that might be Playgroup's "Euphoria".

Into Round 4 now...and cannot BELIEVE that Frankie is beating Ultravox 55% to 44%. C'mon guys! Don't let toothpaste tune "Relax" win over the materpiece that is "Vienna"!!!

^^^ Hardly a masterpiece. An overrated, overblown, and VERY dated slice of 80's pop fluff. Midge Ure's singing is terribly affected and hammy, and the riff is a direct rip-off from their own (albeit John Foxx era) "Maximum Acceleration". Were it not for the decent keyboard solo in the bridge the song would be completely throwaway. Don't get me wrong, I love Ultravox, it's just that I don't get the adulation for this song. I hate it.

I quite disagree, "Vienna" is epic and disarming. It recalls all of your nightmares, turning them on their heads, unleashing a beautiful aria quite distinct from its contemporaries.

And how is "Mad World" losing?!

I am a huge Ultravox and Midge Ure fan, but I also don't totally love Vienna--prefer many more of their songs--but I tend to prefer songs that are less ambient but instead have movement and rhythm to sweep you into the song. That's why I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE a version you must hear if you are a fan of the original. A European synthdance group called Infernal, who is totally influenced by 80s synthpop, did a cover version of Vienna on their CD and it is absolutely stunning. Female singer. Song begins slow, then moves into an electronic dance beat, then gets somewhat eurotrance in the middle with some floaty buildup and finally resolves with a gorgeous modulation and synth riff. But the whole time, it retains the melody of the original.
