Round about 1980, 1981 my best friend and I thought we were New Romantic. Unfortuantely we were 12 or 13 years old and living in Minneapolis. It was pretty hard to emulate Ultravox and Classix Nouveaux in the middle of the country and totally skint. Regardless, I loved and still love most of the music.

Anyone follow the Romo scene that was around a few years back? I only heard about it after the fact.

I love the music from that time and dressed like it in a total working class steel town called Hamilton. Not the best place to dress like that back then. Got called a fag a whole lot back then for the way I used to dress and have my hair.

I read about the romo stuff, but never could find any of it anywhere. If anyone has any, I would love to hear it.

A lot of the 80s new wave that I was/am into is in the New Romantic genre. I dressed New Ro for a while, but also was New Wave and Punk, too. With my friends and I, there was a lot of overlap between liking all the music in these genres and in how we dressed.

Me! *waves hand excitedly*

And I totally agree with what Nowhere Girl just said...the same applied to me, back in the day!

I never really dressed the part, but I loved reading about it (they also called it the 'Blitz' movement'), imagining cool clubs in London where everyone was dressed all crazy and whatnot....

I think of Spandau Ballet's "Journeys to Glory", the Duran Duran debut and Visage debut to be THE new romantic lp releases...

I loved it then, and I still love it now regardless of the times.Adam And The Ants were one of the first that got me started on the New Romantic movement, along with bands like Spandau Ballet's first 2 albums, and Ultravox, and Visage.

[/quote]I couldn't AGREE more! Major changes were happening during that timeline. Plus, so many different music scenes were happening all at once. very interesting period indeed.

Hey there Machman!
We did have a New Ro thread going a while back, but I guess it got swallowed up by the other threads.

I was totally into anything and everything New Ro when I was in Jr. High. I didn’t look the part too much since I was so young and didn’t really have a clue at age 12 what to do. However in bleached jeans, funky shirts, and feathered long blonde bangs, with Duran and other bands pins on my jacket and jeans, I was much cooler than the other kids in my classes. In high school around 88-89 me and a couple of friends starting dressing New Ro again, after the Deathrock scene started to go spiderweb painted, baby doll carrying Goth. I had a blast. Ironically, there was even a New Ro club that came out that same exact time, called Hot Lava. My favorite club that I went to every Wednesday night.

Anyway, I love Duran, Ultravox, Visage, Japan/David Sylvian, Roxy, Spandau, and all the New Wave bands that sort of took on the sound and look, Simple Minds, Flock of Seagulls, Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, etc…. ;o)
