Say what you will about Bono. There's no denying the impact U2 have had on music over the past 30 years. And they continue to make quality music and have influenced lots of great bands today. Coldplay, Keane, and Embrace all come to mind. For me their best album to date was definitely War followed in second by The Unforgettable Fire. I love all their albums actually but War is definitely their best. New Year's Day just might be one the best songs ever written.

What's your favorite album by them?

Love the "Boy" album! Best tour too, saw them in a little hole in the wall in Anaheim... Woodstock's in 1981, I think this was my first concert, not sure... [:)]

I went with "War", I'm one of "those" who don't like anything but a few select songs after "Unforgettable Fire". I feel the biggest impact they made (musically) all happened before 1988...

I went with War too. Boy is really good. October, meh. But I can listen to War start to finish without skipping a song.

i came to know of U2 during the joshua tree era.... then i purchased the unforgettable fire cassette tape... got hooked ever since...

i think achtung baby is another album worth getting...

my rattle and hum CD is about 18 years old...

I voted for October. As Bono was having to improvise a bit after his briefcase full of lyrics was stolen during a show in Portland, Ore., the album is very much based on the feel of the songs rather than meticulously planned studio wizardry. Edge's slashing guitar work is all over this thing.

As a side note, the stolen briefcase was "found" in a Tacoma, Wa. attic a couple of years ago and returned to Bono. I am guessing it was never lost...maybe someone's conscience finally caught up with them?

Hey glokstadt, I would love to hear more about the show from the Boy tour. I first heard about U2 by reading a review of the Seattle show that basically said, "if you weren't there, then forget it!" - then went on to describe how great the show was.

Unforgettable Fire was a little overproduced but still has that great U2 vintage sound
how about the live EPs as well?
I thought those were great!
Joshua Tree was a landmark record ans still holds up, but it seems after ward that have been hit and miss
saw them in 1985 and 2005 and they still sound great live

J. Tree was the high watermark. not a dog in the bunch.

I still say that 3rd album has often made or blocked greatness...

too hard to pick! [:D] I'm torn between Boy and War.

I went with "The Joshua Tree," but I almost picked "All That You Can't Leave Behind." I love it, too.

And with those three lead tracks (and the over exposure) you either stayed on the bus or got off at the next stop...

Has there ever been three consecutive tracks leading an album that were so damn popular????

I love Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree. They're classics. But you know what? I went with Zooropa. I love its dirt and grit and darkness and weirdness. Is it really my favorite U2 album of all time? I don't know. But it's the one I loved the most upon first and subsequent listens.

good point...and I did get off at the next stop (Rattle & Hum was lack for new ideas) the film, I thought was pretty good (at least the concert footage).

but then Achtung came out and I thought it was great..as I did with the 'Lemon' single....

one thing can be said for U2 for as long as they have been around they have consistantly released quality music. U2 are in none of my top 10's, but I give them a lot of respect

War and Boy are basically a tie. War has the rawness, passion and songwriting/arrangement craft. Boy has the unique sound and guitar textures. Tough to say which I love more. The October album comes in third for me-- for such an idiosyncratic album it has great production and a killer melancholy streak.

For me, the Unforgettable Fire began a string of somewhat dull pop albums that were big on pretentiousness and hooks but little of the qualities that made them an interesting Irish post-punk band. Pride and Bad were great songs, but I started to lose interest in their other material.
