David bowie is a god! every band mentiond on this site should thank him, they would ALL put him right at the very top of there to thank list. He was the first true new wave artist. every band i like (and a load of them are mentioned on this site) has bowie's stamp all over them. Im sure the day will come when bowie is held in the highest, way higher than, let's say "the beatles" Punk,new wave,or even the new romantics movement would never of happened without Bowie.

I'm a huge Bowie fan. But it could be argued that he and many others would have never "happened" without The Beatles, Stones, Elvis...

Certainly nobody innovated or "stole" and implemented ideas like Bowie. He made a career out of being a changeling and risked reinventing himself when most others would just be happy to keep on doing the same thing. And when others tried to change and it often didn't work. When Bowie went "Disco" it was cool. When Rod Stewart tried it, it was lame.

Bowie's painful shyness led to the creation of characters he could hide behind. I think it's obvious that many of the original New Wave artists grew up listening to Bowie and were deeply influenced by him.

The Beatles are the first band I can think of that went through significant changes and experimented with their own personas, yet retained, if not increased, their edge and vitality each time.

I'm not sure Kraftwerk falls into that category.

I almost agree completely with you, especially the Elvis reference, he was original, he was rock n roll. But I cannot bring my self to liking Paul McCartney? I think the Beatles was John Lennon. McCartney comes across as "I don't want to upset anyone" after the Beatles I could name only 2 songs that had anything inventive about them. I think he has coasted the last 30 years on ex Beatles catalogue and I believe the whole Beatles experimental and more edgy tracks was all down to john Lennon , sorry if you are a McCartney fan but I believe right down to my very soul that he is the most OVER RATED artist of the 20th centaury.

I always say Bowie and Roxy Music created New Wave, Iggy and the Stooges and Lou Reed and the Velvets created Punk. Sorry, that was also my answer to the "Mt. Rushmore" question last year!

AND DAVID BOWIE has Andy Warhol, Wayne/Jayne County, and Cherry Vanilla to thank...

Do I think he may have made an impact? Sure. Is he a God? No. Punk would have happened even if Bowie never got out of his Anthony Newley phase.

If the Beatles never happened we would probably be listening to polka music about now. Was Bowie influenced by the Beatles? You bet he was.

So, I would have to say the Beatles were more responsible for Bowie than Bowie was responsible for new wave.

*Edit* It should be noted that Roxy Music had more of an impact on the new romantic movement than Bowie...as a matter of fact, the image of the new romantics is rooted in the "glam" artists of the early to mid 70's.

I fail to see how DEVO would have been lost without Bowie. While Bowie was still a glam star DEVO were computer nerds at Kent State.

Bowie ripped off Wayne County and then got all pissy when Wayne called him out on it.

Agree with Ollie. Maybe Bowie had more to do with the "image" of new wave than the actual music.

I love David Bowie's work and have a sizable pile of Bowie cd's, but...I think he had a much larger influence on British new wave than American new wave.

In addition to Ollie Stench's comment about Devo, it seems that a bunch of guitar oriented US new wave bands that could have happened without Bowie: Romeo Void, Marshall Crenshaw, Stray Cats, Dream Syndicate, Red Rockers, Wire Train, Translator, early REM, and most power pop in general.

influenced while he infected others, he just merely carrying
the torch and passed it to another.[^]
