New Wave Outpost Forum

So Kanye is the only hip-hop artist whose album collection I actually have in my iPod. This week, I took his new LP, 808s & Heartbreak, for a spin for the first time. I was excited not just as a fan of Kanye (who has wonderfully sampled long-time favorites such as Bond's "Diamonds Are Forever" and Daft Punk in the past), but as a fan of New Wave: this album has been described as the most Synthpop Hip-Hop album ever. Alas, I was not disappointed...

So here you have it, a little favorite from Tears For Fears' first album, The Hurting. "Memories Fade" has been refashioned as "Coldest Winter," a dirge for Kanye's mother, one presumes. There are echoes of Puff Daddy doing "Every Step You Take," sure, but I think Kanye hits it out of the ballpark, reworking the chorus and using the bed of the song as the beat and melody. With so many threads about current artists raping old classics, I found Kanye's contribution to be an excellent spin on what should have been an obscure song for the masses. Enjoy, friends!

That's just crazy! I know most on here will disagree, but I'm with TheMunDial in thinking it's pretty good. Maybe Kanye is a closet new wave fan. I think he's working his fans up for his Ebn-Ozn tribute.

Tasty! I had the complete opposite reaction to Puff Daddy's take on the Police...that one just about killed any desire to listen to Sting or the Police for a long time - time has healed that wound though.

Anyway, I like how Kanye drops in the moody synth sound from the original.

Wasn't expecting much but he actually does do a rather nice adaptation of a deep cut from the early TFF catalogue. Kudos to him![8D]

Sorry...Not on board with it. Not a big of Kanye fan at all! Even if he might be a closet New Wave fan. If he is a New Wave fan, make a new wave original track, don't use other accomplished New Wave artist material. A remix is one thing, but this is unacceptable. Maybe if I were 20 or 25 years old, and have not been exposed to New Wave from the 80s, I may like it. But knowing New Wave, NO! Don't get me wrong the exposure to those old New Wave tracks is great, but at what cost to the original...yes this agrument well go on and on, but what can you do?

I don't hate it, but it just seems kind of pointless. It is so close to just being a copy of the original, why didn't he just call it a cover and be done with it. Why change the name of the song and add a couple of new lyrics and fashion it as your own? At least he took a decent song that otherwise would be lost in the 80's.

Had enough of these hip-hop knuckleheads sampling original tracks. Can any of these "artists" (have to hold back a groan everytime they call themselves "artists") do a cover without using an existing track ? Can any of them even play a musical instrument ? Nope.

You definitely do. Everyone has different likes and dislikes, and I dislike the practice of sampling. It's a shameless rip-off. The worst was probably "Under Pressure", a great song, being cannibalized
by Vanilla Ice. Since then any hip-hop take on previously recorded material just pisses me off.

I really cannot understand why there's all of the hoopla for Kanye. Nothing really special in my opinion. Anyways, a girl in my office asked me, you don't listen to Kanye? I responded by saying "I'd like to keep it that way". [;)]
