Thanks for the cassette dubs, they are an invaluable resource. BTW, the second 1981 tape seems to be broken, i only get an 8k file.

It was great to hear KROQ from 1981. That is the earliest recording of KROQ during regular programming hours that I've heard.
I could not download part 2 either. Could you try redoing it or maybe using 4Share. Thank you!

How very strange! I'll try it again with 4shared.

This is the earliest recording I've ever heard of KROQ in that format as well. I have a KROQ tape from Christmas Eve 1977, but the music format was different and the DJ was drunk.

Thank You! A very rare and precious recording.
KROQ deejay Eugene Oregon was top 40 radio veteran Big Ron O'Brien who passed away earlier this year. It is really bizzare hearing Rush and Led Zeppelin on KROQ.
I'm really curious how you acquired this recording. Did you record it yourself?

I did not record the 1981 tape myself. It is, at best, second generation quality. I obtained it around 10-12 years ago with some other Southern California recordings (KLOS, KMET, etc.). It is my understanding the original recording was actually stored in a barn on a reel-to-reel tape, so it wasn't in the best condition in the first place.

Regarding Rush, the Moving Pictures LP was popular in 1980/1981. KROQ and similar stations would play mainstream AOR/Top 40 artists to catch dial scanners who might've been listening to another station; lure them in with a Top 40 track and hope they stick around for your core artists. A couple of the airchecks you posted contain Hall and Oates, Madonna and the Rolling Stones in that spirit.

Interesting. I do have lots of KJET Seattle recordings and have digitized all of them. Also have a couple KYYX tapes not digitized, and a buttload of KUPS Tacoma tapes from when I was DJing there in 85.
I Have digitized 4 of those.
Plus a few other gems I've acquired from friends and trades. A KZAM tape from about 1980 or 81, Dozens of CKST tapes from the early 90s (so... whatever). A KROQ tape from 87.
Don't know if anyone wants to hear them.
I use the KJET tapes to get the original IDs for my KJET tribute station online as well as DJ intros and whatnot. They also reveal some omitted tracks from the Playlist offered by one of the DJs that had a KJET page a while back.
Perhaps I should put some of these online.

bleek, thanks for offering--I think there are many of us here who'd love to hear KYYX and KJET tapes in mp3.

To this day, I beat myself up that while I recorded TONS of music off of KYYX and KJET back in the day, I rarely included djs (except for some Steven Rabow because I dug him so much), commercials, on-air chatter, station IDs, etc. Back then, I was strangely into cutting all that out, as if I wanted my tapes to be purely musical in content. That's precisely what I wanted then, but now I wish I wouldn't have edited so much. [:(][:(]

It does seem almost everyone was editing the djs, ads and IDs out of their radio recordings.
I went to broadcasting school and for some reason thought that the production end of these ads and IDs would be of interest 20 years later. Now I'm glad I thought that way.
I still have some concert promos for Hoodoo Gurus and Psych Furs, etc. Plus many of the KJET IDs.
I'll digitize those KYYX tapes for you guys.

There will be an early KJET recording coming up soon. It's a very early 1982 tape. A bit choppy because I was recording over a bit of it when I wanted to get some tracks from KYYX so there's a little of that in there too.
I am recording those KYYX tapes now and should have them up later too.
