Way back then, my mum (not so much my dad, who would usually proclaim [i]"you call that music? get off my lawn, you kids!"[/i]) was often curious about my new wave music. She'd ask sometimes [i]"what are you listening to?"[/i] or [i]"Who is this group?"[/i]. However, she usually didn't like it after hearing it. She's more into rock (Stones, Led Zeppelin). She thought the emphasis on fashion & makeup was hilarious, but she also admired the artistry and avant-garde expression for what it was.

So, to sum up: I'd play it for them, but it wasn't their taste. They usually rolled their eyes. Much like I imagine their own parents did at that age, when The Stones, The Beatles, or The Kinks came along.

Since my room adjoined my mom's room in our old house, she was subjected to the club level sonic equivalent of WLIR's Saturday night dance party on a regular basis or other times, whatever was currently on the station playlist back in the day. (I was pretty up to date with my music collection from 1982-88.. waay too many trax to mention here).

Soo.. of all the artists I played during those years, the only one she commented favorably on was.. Culture Club[:I]

I don't know what possessed my mom to buy Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon", but she did and I heard it and was hooked. She never got her record back, and that record led me to New Wave.

The Scottish side of my family loved Big Country. My parents liked Duran Duran, and I can hear my Dad now "Please, Please Tell Me Now, this is the beatles, isn't it?"

On the other hand, my Dad used to hate Tears For Fears, he called them Beers For Queers.

My Mom once called Echo & the BMen's "Back of Love" the worst song she ever heard. I love them for that!

My Mother once refused to believe there was band called Oingo Boingo until I played "Stay".

My mom, on the other hand, couldn't stop laughing at Morrissey's voice.

My mom once described Gary Numan's music as a funeral dirge. On the other hand she loved OMD's Forever Live and Die. She also went to a UB40 show with me , with the Smithereens warming up.
