The Church issues new ‘Untitled #23#8242; album, plots summer tour of U.S.

One of Australia’s greatest and most overlooked musical exports, The Church, this week unveiled the dates of its “So Love May Find Us” tour of the U.S. in June and July.

The American trek follows the release of Untitled #23, a record that the band, on its Web site, calls “a haunting, dark, thrilling, ecstatic, melodic, psychedelic journey in 10 unforgettable pieces.”

While Amazon lists the album as being released May 12 in America, it’s already for sale on the band’s official site.

Still best known for its late-’80s near-hits “Under the Milky Way” and “Reptile,” the Church — now nearly 30 years old — has soldiered on with a core lineup featuring, for most of that time, its three founding members, Steve Kilbey, Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes.

The band’s 19-date U.S. trek opens June 10 in Solana Beach, Calif., north of San Diego. Adam Franklin and Bolts of Melody, featuring the ex-Swervedriver frontman, will open the dates.

Thanks Ebb. I'd like to catch them multiple times on this tour. They've been really consistent with their music, even lately. Their last non-instrumental, Uninvited Like the Clouds, helped make 2005 one of the best post-New Wave years in memory, with good releases by them Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, Simple Minds, Heaven 17 and New Order.

I've been digging Kilbey's new solo album a lot. The Londonderry show's only 2 hours away from me but it figures it would have to be 4th of July weekend. [:(]

I'm gonna make a point of catching them in Solana Beach ... never done that gig yet but I've seen the Bondi Boys many times in the past 12 or so years. They are still relevant in my book.

You know, at first I thought the album title (Untitled #23) was sort of a randomly chosen, generic-sounding "piss off" when I realized that -- holy crap -- they arguably have some 22 albums in their back catalogue! Their output in the past 10 years has been seriously prolific.
