I decided to have a go at a Name That Tune contest of my own...an ALL CANADIAN version!

http://www.zshare.net/audio/5981515564708643/

Regular rules apply:
- 20 songs
- 1 point for naming the song
- 1 point for naming the artist
- email your answers to me
- don't post your answers in the thread
- DEADLINE: 2 weeks, May 23

Bonus: Name the guest artist on song 3 for 1 point, name that person's band for anohter 1 point.

I suspect a few of the Canucks on the board will have perfect scores, the Rest of the World may be challenged by a couple of songs.

Hope you enjoy!

I'm figuring if I guess Gino Vanelli on every song, I'll get at least 1 pt.

Take off, you hoser. This one is Gina Vanelli, Bryan Adams, Luba, Parachute Club and Glass Tiger free.

First response in already with a very respectable 30 + 2 bonus points!!!

Good day, eh?

Alright you hosers, time to get your responses in...by this weekend!

No 1 and No 20 are definitely the tough ones!

As I expected, wherewereuin82 is the winner with a very impressive 19 of 20 songs/artists corrrect plus the bonus points, for a total score of 40 out of 42!!! Congrats!!!

Thanks to the rest who participated, you all did a fine job, though it strikes me that our friends from outside North America had a much harder time identifying songs that would be considered "staples" in Canada. It just goes to show we had talented bands that sadly just didn't break beyond our borders.

Number 1 and Number 20 were definitely the stumpers. No one got Number 1.

1) Roman Grey - Look Me In the Eyes

Roman Grey charted in Canada in the late 80's with IBU and Shangri La, but this 1982 7" single only made an impact in Italy.

2) The Box - My Dreams Of You

Cool synth tune from the Montreal band before they got all popped out with Closer Together.

3) Payola$ with Carole Pope - Never Said I Loved You

(Bonus - Carole Pope was the lead singer of Rough Trade, with singles such as All Touch, Weapons and Highschool Confidential)

4) The Spoons - Nova Heart

The easiest by far, I think everyone got it right!

5) FM - Just Like You

I'm surprised how many of you got this one! FM featured Nash the Slash.

6) Men Without Hats - Where Do The Boys Go?

7) Images In Vogue - In The House

A great synth band that never really broke, they released a fair amount of material. Again, I'm surprised how many people got this right.

8) Trans X - Message On The Radio

A better song than Living on Video, IMO.

9) Red Rider - Human Race

Tom Cochrane later had a massive solo hit "Life Is A Highway" that many of you would know.

10) Platinum Blonde - Sad Sad Rain

Some of you will kick yourself you didn't get this one, but it doesn't really matter!

11) One To One - Angel In My Pocket

One of Danielwaver's posts made me remember this band that I'd otherwise forgotten about.

12) Martha & The Muffins - Cooling The Medium

13) Eye Eye - Out On A Limb

14) The Arrows - Meet Me In The Middle

15) Tic Toc - Twenty Questions

16) Blue Peter - Radio Silence

17) K-Tels - I Hate Music

I would accept Young Canadians as the group name since they were forced to change their name by K-Tel records in a lawsuit. Some of you know I'm an Art Bergmann zealot...this was one of his earliest recordings with the influential K-Tels from the Vancouver Complication.

18) Strange Advance - Kiss In The Dark

19) Rational Youth - Saturdays In Silesia

20) Viletones - Screamin' Fist

wherewereuin82 was the only correct answer on this one from perhaps THE Toronto punk band of the era.

That was fun, I hope you enjoyed this little bit of Cancon...now I'll turn the Name That Tune floor back over to rsgonzalez!!!

Wow, I held off on answering this. I never would have guessed Roman Grey. When you said a hit in Europe, I was thinking Lime or someone like that[xx(]. My ears just wouldn't let me search them. No one else got #20? Hard to believe.

Who got the high score among regular people (non-Canadians)?

I think it might have been Jefe with 26 points, but there are some people whose nationality is unknown to me!!!

We take the good parts of America, the best of the Brits, a pinch of French just for seasoning and end up with the greatest people on the planet here in Canada (well except for those Quebec fuckers...a little seasoning is nice but they're like pure poivre up your nose)!

Never mind that...what was the high score among non-participants?

Yeesh,
well for your information eight6, just from taking a look at that list, I would've only gotten 8 pts....for #4, 6, 8, & 19. As a non-participant, that's pretty pathetic. Leave us alone ![;)]

As a non-participant, I would've gotten 3, 4, 6, and 7. Maybe the Blue Peter song. Plus the bonus questions, for a guaranteed 10 points.
