New wave “classics” that you’ve never liked

We all have favorite artists from the new wave era, and while we can be hardcore fans, I think most of us end up having classic songs by these bands that we simply never liked—they just never did it for us (so I don’t mean songs you liked but then got sick of, I mean tracks you didn’t like from the start). Personally, I have found peace with most of these tracks for nostalgic reasons, but I still wouldn’t choose to listen to them. Here are some of my least favorites. What are yours?

New Order – True Faith and Shellshock
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus and Never Let Me Down Again
Erasure – Ship of Fools
The Cure – Love Cats and Why Can’t I Be You
Camouflage – The Great Commandment
Duran Duran – Rio
Psychedelic Furs – Heartbreak Beat
Adam Ant – Goody Two Shoes
INXS – Devil Inside and Never Tear Us Apart

Absolutely anything by Level 42 or Alphaville.

** May as well throw anything by Frankie Goes To Hollywood in there too. I'm sure my list could be endless **

Oh yeah. have to agree with Level 42. I could not even understand why they were considered new wave. Although, now when I listen to "Something About You", I can better stomach it--as a mainstream pop song.

When I first started reading this thread, and before getting to the song list, I immediately thought of "Ship Of Fools" by Erasure. It's an OK song, but I never liked the "He was the baby of the class" line.

I'll add:

"Kiss Me" - Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy (again, not a terrible tune, but I don't like the lyrics, particularly the chorus)

Tears For Fears - "The Way You Are"

"Words like conviction can turn into a sentence"

Pretty much anything by New Order will make my ears bleed. They might have had about 3 or 4 good songs, all of which were ruined once Sumner's voice was laid on top of them.

The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?" (again, a could-have-been-good band ruined by insufferable lead vocals... not that this particular song has anything resembling a melody)
Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" (tainted is right - actually, I hate this band in general)
The Assembly - "Never Never" (the instrumental B-side is okay; this is horrid)
Toni Basil - "Mickey" (is this new wave? whatever we think it is, we can all agree it's ear-raping torture)
The Go-Go's - "We Got the Beat" (ick)
Talking Heads - "Psycho Killer" (I loves me some Talking Heads, but not this one)
EBN-OZN - "AEIOU (Sometimes Y)" (How on earth can anyone think this is good under any definition of the term? The second single, "Bag Lady (I Wonder)," was actually a pretty good song. This was a total mess.)
Flying Lizards - "Money" (horrible cover)
Devo - "Satisfaction" (ditto)
Our Daughters Wedding - "Lawnchairs" (unlistenable nonsense)
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax" and "Two Tribes" (take your pick, they're the same exact song)

And of course the entire Toyah catalogue.

Anything by Kim Wilde, UB40, Bow Wow Wow, Culture Club, Toyah.

Most of Bananarama's catalogue. Most of Level 42's catalogue.

That is funny to see this on your list, Blir. My husband says the same thing. He's not particularly a new wave fan, but he usually doesn't mind listening to whatever I have on. Whenever this song comes on (and it does a lot, b/c it's one of my faves), his reaction is "what is it about this song ? Why the love ?" I know, I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I saw this and I couldn't resist. [;)]
