I just got a Slacker radio a few days ago & am using it to enjoy some old new wave & 80s. For those who don't know, it is an mp3 player that ties into slacker.com website and synchronizes personalized 'stations' over WiFi. The trick is to create each station with the most obscure characteristic artist of a sub-genre e.g. Josef K or Fad Gadget or Fischer-Z. Problem is if they ever had commercial success, the associations are ruined! After a while you are listening to OMD or Depeche Mode, but what the hey, every know & then I get a real treat or relative rarity. Some are thinly associated e.g. The Nails leads off with "88 Lines..." but cues up Delta 5 and Pylon.

I have it feeding into my main stereo system while it charges from usb/AC & I can add stations via my web browser, which it then gets over wifi. It also dloads allmusic artist bio & album reviews and has a very nice screen & interface.

It also tells you what is next... oh boy, some Go-Betweens coming up.

If you're looking to drop $50-70 on an mp3 player, check it out -- it allows you to use 1/2 the 4-8GB for your own files.

I've been thinking about getting one of these ever since last fall when they merged XM and Sirius and ruined most of the XM stations (most notably Fred, of course).

Do you just buy the unit and you're done, or is there a subscription feed, too?

They have a premium account that allows skipping more or saving tracks but i'm going to avoid that if I can (I get my albums via emusic until this whole Sony deal kills it). Free works well enough for now.
