Ok...who did the shitty Major Tom(Peter Schilling version) cover for that recent car commercial?(I want to say Acura) I saw it earlier, and was PISSED. WHy do they keep doing this shit? Just play the original, is that so hard? I understand Peter might not have given his "permission" to play the original, but why give it for a shitty cover? and if you did give "permission" for a shitty cover, then why not just play the original instead?

it's Shiny Toy Guns, one of the most awesome new wave revival bands of the last decade. It's on their recent remix compilation CD.

Oh, it's not so bad. The cold female voice adds something for the verses, but I'm not so fond of her belting out the chorus. I've heard some awful covers, but I don't think this is one of them.

The commercial is for the Lincoln MKZ. I think it's a pretty solid and respectful cover. The Lincoln campaigns have been very hi-tech and as classic as Peter Schilling's original is, it would sound way too dated for Lincoln's ads.

Beside's, it's more expensive to license the actual track (master sync license would be required) than just the song (which merely requires a fee to the publishers/writers for the composition).

Just listened to it......sad, just sad. Another limp version of an 80's song. [xx(]

Being a BOC fan they murder this song too. It's way over the top.

On the the subject of Lincoln car commercials the Duke Spirit have been nominated to have one of their songs appear in a spot. Vote here. I hope they don't make them do a terrible cover.

This pathetic cover just debuted on the Hot 100 this week. I seriously want to maul everybody responsible for both making it and putting it there.

The only good news is, just like Peter Schilling, I'm sure this wretched band will never have another hit.

All of a sudden everybody on this board is a marketing genius.

Of course, very few covers can capture the magic of the original song. But had they used the original, you'd probably be pissing and moaning about how your cherished memories got sold out and the integrity of the song is now forever tainted just so somebody could sell furniture polish.

Sure, it's a tall order to cover a classic song and do it justice. But remember, the reason that the song even occurred to you that day is because somebody liked it enough to suggest it for the campaign, others agreed and somebody paid a bunch of money to get it in the spot and on to yours and thousands of others TVs.

I appreciate that a song from the 80s can still have that kind of impact. That in itself is a tribute to the greatness of the song aside from how good or bad of a cover it may be.

I for one am happy that the classic music of the 80s is still considered relevant in current advertising and hasn't been replaced with a bunch of shitty rap songs. At least not yet.

Just listened to this in its entirety. I'm partial to almost anything by STG and this cover is no exception. I see it as an interesting and worthy update of a timeless classic. They're not being disrespectful to the original or going overboard trying to make it sound edgy....Unlike Flo Rida taking a shit all over you spin me round last year.

Shiny Toy Guns have been around for a few years and I thin they're an interesting band that seems to have a good handle on the sound and look of the New Wave era.

Awesome cover of Burnin' for You--didn't know they had recorded that. Looks like it was only released as an MP3. bummer. I wish they would release another album and include that--and go back to their old new wave sound. Their last album was a mess IMO.
