everything is not always about America;
Ian Dury was a consistent chart star in the UK during the punk era,and his story is far from the norm,great subject matter for a film;
just because America isn't in on it doesn't mean that the film couldn't be a hit in the UK,and that success could launch interest in the USA...
this was intended to be a reply to the sex and drugs and rocknroll post...sorry

Then why I am familiar with a TON of Toyah songs but only a couple of Ian's? I've been purchasing New Wave music since I was 12 and I'm well versed on the UK charts since almost everyone I love musically hails from the UK. I am an American whose taste is extremely "Un-American" and that includes films too. So there was no need for you to be nasty in responding to my post in the other Ian thread. Oh, and Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Sex & Drugs & Rock N Roll are far from great.

I'm not being nasty, just saying that some here think that if the U.S. audience didn't embrace something,that it didn't exist;
I myself am not a Dury fan but I am a chart fan,UK especially, and I know he had a huge,punk era impact over there,pre new wave;
he also developed a U.S. following thanks to Stiff Records getting an American deal with CBS, a luxury that Toyah never had thanks to being stuck on Safari Records with no U.S. affiliate..

Ian Dury punk? Granted, the band had punk leanings but were largely based in funk due to Chas Jankel writing the music (check out Questionnaire by him, it's a nice album). If Dury's influences had a wider scope than 30 miles around his home town then his music would of been accepted by a larger group of people which explains why he never made it in America.

The only albums Ian Dury likes of his are New Boots and Panties and Mr Love Pants and are a great starting place for his music.

no where do I state that Ian Dury was punk;
I do state that he was a UK chart success in the punk era;
artists that made it in America were the artists that got pushed with $$$$ and favors by major record labels,which is why people were so anxious to jump from cutting edge indie labels to the big fat bloated corporate labels;
I would certainly hope that none here are naive enough to believe that their new wave faves that were successes here made it solely on 'how good' they were;
if so,wake up and smell the hash pipe..

Where did I say you did? Ian Dury had very little chance of making it on the other side of the pond due to his lack of scope, not many Americans at the time would of got Plaidstow Patricia or Razzle in my Pocket.

Ian had very few commercial singles here compared to the UK, so not a lot of chances to have American hits. Of the ones he did get, "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" was the only one I thought should have been a hit. A year later and the "Laughter" album and "Sueperman's Big Sister's" single made me wonder why he was even still making music.

It has to be said 'Laughter' was very ironically titled, with reminiscences of his experiences of growing up in an institution and also unfortunately highlighting his clever turn of phrase was deserting him.

The last stand out track he did before Mr. Love Pants was 'Spasticus Autisticus' written for the year of the disabled, which was rejected and the song banned from the radio:

It's to that show that I discovered that Aussie bands Liquid Engineers and The Orphans (not the Perth punk band). Could you provide some information about those two (epscially Liquid Engineers as I would love to know more about them)as it's very difficult for someone who didn't live there at the time to find out more about them.
