Cheap Trick - New Wave Cred?

Postby roc51 » Thu Mar 25, 2010 12:25 pm

Just looking to clear up the New Wave credibility of Cheap Trick...are they New Wave or Rock?

Personally, I don't view them as New Wave or related (Post-Punk, Indie, Alternative, etc)

Any thoughts?

I believe the Philippines accredited them, but the US and UK denied their New Wave credentials. I'm not sure which precedent Australia will follow.

Who's Georgie?

Australia never had the full blown New Wave scene but their were some great bands to come out of the scene here...The Church, Go-Betweens and Triffids being among the finest.

There's a discussion of this here:

I didn't think they were NW then, and I still don't. They're a damn fine band just the same.

I'd strongly suggest Rock over NW.

Saw them a year or so ago with Def Leppard. They were awsome (though an mot a fan of Def Leppard.. credit to them also.. they were great)

I saw them when they toured for "Rockford ", still a great band. Love this new song.

They're touring with Squeeze this summer. Cheap Trick are just one of those kinds of bands. They can open for Def Leppard. Open for Squeeze. Doesn't matter. [:D]

Loves me some Cheap Trick. Not really new wave. But some of the finest rock & roll of the past 35 years.

Yup, they are one of those bands that just keeps on giving. They never sound dated to my ears.

their big hit The Flame is in the monster ballad/AOR category...
Discogs has a Power Pop label for them, whatever that means..

I was watching Foreigner Behind the Music on VH1 the other day, and thought of CT, so gave Dream Police a spin....and voila there's a New Wave cred topic here too [:D]

That ain't saying much though is it??
OK, follow-up topic (not sure if it's been posed before): Were there good NW bands that came from the Midwest?
