New Wave Outpost Forum

If you were to mention this name to the casual radio listener, the only thing that would probably come to mind is their song "Perfect Way" as its a staple of many retro 80's radio shows. However I really do like their album Cupid & Psyche "85". It actually reminds me of some of Level 42's early stuff. Their follow up "provision" is quite similar and almost just as good. And the vocalist Green Gartside seems to have just the right voice for this type of music. Are their any fans of this group here? Would you consider them to being new wave?

I won't step into the philisophical pile of dog doo-doo that is debating if they were/are considered NW.

That being said, I love Cupid and Psyche--very melodic and terrific lyrics.

I even like Provision some--if for no other reason that it contains a song that uses the word "Pharmacopeia" in it (twice!)[:D]

In my book, Scritti Politti qualifies as new wave, as does Level 42 (although much less so). That was a time when new wave was morphing in different directions. I thought White Bread and Black Beer (from a few years ago) was pretty good.

For me Scritti Politti screams only one thing "Wood Beez"! Pretty sure it's the only song that really got any air down here (from memory anyway).

Based on that I had assumed them to be 80's pop / one hit wonders... but as is usually the case with these sorts of things, the river usually runs a little deeper.

Yes, I think they're NW.

You guys should check out their earlier stuff; it's positively undefinable. "Skank Bloc Bologna" is a real trip. Quite unlike their later poppier ([i]Cupid and Psyche[/i]) material.

Great band. Only got into them a couple of years ago and was playing them to death for a bit.
