Name That Tune, April 2010 -- answers and winners

Time for another Name That Tune! The rules are a little different this time.

One point for correct song, one point for correct artist. Twenty songs total means forty points. That much is the same, but now there are some bonus points. This NTT has a theme -- something all 20 songs have in common. It's nothing obscure or brain-wracking, so don't try too hard. If you give me the answer I'm looking for (or another one that I agree with), you get five more points. So, the maximum possible score is 45.

Send me your answers with the "Email poster" button or at rsgonzalez(at)gmail.com.

You've got three weeks. The deadline is Monday, May 3 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Good luck, and enjoy!

Huh, too funny, Raul. I was gonna e-mail you to suggest using a common theme for your next NTT but never got around to it. I figured if someone could decipher the common thread, it might make guessing the songs slightly easier. This one doesn't seem too bad at first listen.

One week left, and I've only gotten two responses. Are people losing interest? Was having a "theme" a bad idea?

Only three days left on this one. I've only gotten three responses, and there's plenty of room left at the top.

I don't think it was a bad idea. Stating the theme ahead of time to help with one's guesses might be a better idea than having to guess the theme, though.

Got mine in. I think having a theme was a cool idea, even though I'm not sure I got it.

Yeah, I think that's what I will try next time.

Thanks to everyone who played! A better turnout than last time, and overall a good game! Eight people submitted answers, with the average score being 21.5 points.

The inclusion of a theme may have thrown some people off. In the future, if I have a theme, I'll probably state it up front, using it as a guide instead of as a head-scratcher. On this one, the theme was that these are all American bands. My previous NTTs had a mixture of American and British bands, with a handful of artists from other countries thrown in. No one got it, though I had some good guesses.

01. Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party (7 got the artist; 6 got the song)
02. Timbuk3 - The Future's So Bright (7 got the artist; 7 got the song)
03. Talking Heads - Life During Wartime (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
04. The Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone (7 got the artist; 7 got the song)
05. Slow Children - President Am I (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)
06. The Producers - She Sheila (1 got the artist; 1 got the song)
07. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
08. Gary Myrick - Time To Win (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)
09. The Cars - Magic (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
10. Cowboy Mouth - Hurricane (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)
11. Devo - Girl U Want (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
12. 4 Out Of 5 Doctors - Modern Man (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)
13. Mission Of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver (2 got the artist; 2 got the song)
14. Humans - I Live In The City (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)
15. The Embarrassment - Sex Drive (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)
16. Blondie - Atomic (7 got the artist; 7 got the song)
17. The Call - Everywhere I Go (4 got the artist; 5 got the song)
18. The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away (6 got the artist; 6 got the song)
19. Wire Train - Chamber Of Hellos (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)
20. Polyrock - Romantic Me (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)

Scores:
3rd place: (tie) schwenko and eighties, each with 22 points
2nd place: Jim2, with 25 points
1st place: Third win for Jefe, with 28 points!

I couldn't find an available snippet of Gary Myrick's "Time To Win," and two of the other harder songs, I could only find live versions of. Ah well. Here's what I got:

The Producers - She Sheila

Cowboy Mouth - Hurricane (not the New Orleans band that did "Jenny Says")

Well done to the old guard! Sorry I never got a chance to sit down with this...the age of ADD I guess.

Out of 8 players only 2 people got this one? That's pathetic.
