I've been looking into buying an analog modeling synthesizer for myself so that I can play my favorite new wave tracks. I'm trying to spend under $400 but I could possibly be convinced to spend another $100-$200. I've got three synths I'm considering so far: the MicroKorg, Korg MS2000, and Roland SH-201. The latter two I would be buying used on Ebay. I've heard good things about the Alesis Micron but it only has three knobs which I'm sure will frustrate me when trying to make my own sounds. Any suggestions?

Have you considered a softsynth? I've got the arturia factory experience that has 3500 analog patches from some of the classic synths of the day including Moog, Roland, Sequential Circuits, and Oberheim. It comes with a slave MIDI keyboard and its pretty much plug and play into a laptop.

Although its not analog I also recently got the Roland Juno-Di that has some great reproductions of some fat analog sounds.

The arturia looks cool, but couldn't I just buy a hardware synth and then use it as a MIDI controller? The software by itself is only $100.

Sure--but be careful. I've seen posts on the Arturia website that the software may not recognize older keyboards. I got both just to make sure it worked and have been very happy with it

I use the Korg MS 2000 on stage with my '80s retro band.
I love it. It is big and fat and sounds like a million bucks, and getting one for under $500 is pretty common.

Also, last week, I test drove the new Roland Gaia. WOW. That's a little nicer, with all sorts of modern bells and whistles (USB input for your '80s sound samples), lots of nobs and sliders, it sounds like a dream as well. It's listing for about $650. I have put that on my wish list.

The MicroKorgs are pretty good and pretty cheap. I've got a Korg R3 and love it, but its MUCH more synth than I will ever need.

I bought an Axiom 61 for my old singer and used Reason 4.
It has many great features. With one Keyboard you can split
the keys in to many sections to set as different Synth sounds.
So there are some good reasons to get a new midi Controller/Software.

But if you want an Analog Synth for 80's type stuff look a the Juno8
or DX7 I think you can get those online for ~$400
