Just listened to the great first lp of Pukka Orchestra.A bit weird-lyrically-dramatic new wave rock with influences from XTC to Graham Parker and Police.Majestic songs,a music treasure of Canada's underrated 80's scene.Anyone remembers them?

Oh yeah. Loved that album.

I always enjoyed this version of Listen To The Radio much, much better than the Tom Robinson "Atmospherics: Listen To The Radio" original.

As pop bands go I always liked these guys. Cherry Beach Express got a lot of commercial airplay in my neck of the woods, which you can't say for many songs about police brutality.

Liked their [b]The Palace of Memory[/b] EP as well. Not everybody would rhyme "New Testament" with "good invest-a-ment".

Let's start also a talk about Canada's obscure new wave/power pop bands or even some older ones -which in a way influenced punk rock-like Thundermug or Sweeney Todd.I have in my mind G-Rays,Dishes(very early theatrical pop rock ala Sparks),Daily Planet/Rough Trade(with Carol Pope),Viletones,the all girl group The Curse,Pointed Sticks,Diodes,Darkroom,Strange Advance etc.Can you add other ones or tell your opinion about this underrated scene?

[:)] My favourite Pukka moment was walking home in the rain, past all the limo's for the record company folks with a CASBY award under my coat because I didn't have money for the streetcar. My mother got a 'quote of the year' along with David Bowie in a Music Industry Mag for, "How can you be successful Tony, you're always so broke!"
We were living the Canadian Dream. High Art, no payoff!
Graeme, Neil and I are still soul brothers and whenever we are together things happen.... maybe even a collection of new material one day.....

A CASBY or a U-Know? U-knows seem so much cooler [:D]

I bought Pukka Orchestra album after a friend told me a about a record with a weird sleeve not far away from what the Ralph label did at the same time.I totally enjoyed the rich romanticism of the album together with the somewhat quirky arrangements in some songs.I also discovered some highly political opinions about the Toronto every day life and peoples relations with the Authority.Great to have a member of the band here,hope for a cd compilation sometime.And what about Graeme,is it true he lives somewhere in Scotland?

OK- I know it is supposed to be a paddywagon, but where does Cherry Beach come from?

It was the year they were switching from U-know to CASBY so both names got talked about. The award said U-know but people talked 'CASBY' - Hey it's all cool, they're just names anyway!

Graeme lives in Glasgow and comes here when he can to work on writing projects. He is one cool cucumber!
