Jonothan Richman/Modern Lovers

Did anybody ever listen to the Jonathon Richman and the Modern Lovers ? I decided to sift thru some LP'S and remember this album from 1976-77.I listened to the cd I bought a long time ago. I got the album in 1978 when I was in 8th grade.It's been years since I listened to it.What's odd is that I found he did this tune way back in 1971.Talk about the early days of pre-punk besides the likes of Hasil Adkin,Stooges, etc.... here it is: "She Cracked" .

I'm embarassed to say that they're a fairly recent discovery for me too. How do you think it makes me feel to admit that Richman's guitar cameos in "There's Something About Mary" is what put him on my radar screen?! Then I realized I'd heard stuff like "Roadrunner" without really grokking who or what it was. Chalk up another great soundtrack/movie by Richard Linklater - is he our John Hughes of the 90s/00s?

I have their best of and the songs are great. I really like Richman's kinda average, casual voice, it has a lot of appeal. I also own several of his solo albums and they are very quirky and fun to listen to and the best one is "Jonathan Sings" circa 1983, I think. Very underrated group/artist!

The first Modern Lovers album (really a collection of demos from 1972, is that the one you have?) will go with me to the grave. Absolutely essential.
You have to get the "Modern Lovers" album, not "The Original Modern Lovers" or "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers." Both are good, but if have only one...
Bowie does an awful cover of Pablo Picasso on Reality.
