Was @ Amoeba today, and they had a BS cd with a ton of tracks on it, I was close to pulling the trigger, but I know NOTHING about this band. What is their sound like? Are they: new wave/synthpop?minimal/etc?

Thanks alot gang. Also, what "Secession" stuff should I be buying? I dont really want anything past say 1990, can anyone recommend what cd's to pick up by them?

most secession stuff will cost you a fortune. it's about time they get a good 2-disc set with all their singles and remixes on it.

The Belle Stars are kinda like Bananarama. I'd only known their singles and when I bought their full 2-disc CD, there were only a few songs that really appealed to me.

Secession is like blending the best of New Order with the best of Joy Division and sprinkling on a little bix of Clan of Xymox. Their music is dark and dancey with the energy of the music from the mid to late 80's. Here are my favorites and yes, they should release a two cd set containing all of their extended versions, b-sides, and rarities.

The Magician
Promise
Betrayal

The album "A Dark Enchantment" is one of the best albums around.

secession is a great group, they have many great songs...Sean, i totally agree with your description of them.I bought the album A dark enchantment many years ago..great album.Such a shame the the lead singer took his life..what a terrible waste of talent.Secession was ahead of their time.The belle stars have IKO IKO and another great song called Sign of the times check out that song one day..

The best Belle Stars songs are 'Sign of the Times', 'Sweet Memory' and 'World Domination'. Budaniel's description of them is spot on, get those three and don't bother with the rest.

Also, a few members of Secession went on to join The Vaselines.

Thanks gang...listening to the song "Touch" right now...amazing. How come this band was never bigger in the states? What album is "Touch" on btw? What I'd find funny, is if a label like Wounded bird/Cherry Red, were to reissue/remaster a few of their cd's? Then, the originals wouldnt be worth so much, and prices would come back down to respectibility, and so forth?

Loving "Touch" right now..... is this on any goth/darkwave comps?

Unfortunately "Touch" isn't available on any official CD, however all the mixes of it are available digitally (iTunes, Amazon...)

Oh no, definitely not. Iko Iko and The Clapping Song are fantastic too, especially if you've got the club remixes.

I have the 12" of "The Magician" by Secession, it's one of my favorite records. There is a sample in the beginning of it that is a vocoder voice saying "just move your body to the beat, it's tiiiiime", other than "Al Nayfish" by Hashim, does anyone know where I can find that sample as a straight acapella, without the beat behind it?

Their cover songs never really did anything for me, but it's horses for courses.

Oh my, how could any discussion of Secession NOT include "[b]Fire Island[/b]" (esp. the 12") ?!? I love this song so much I wanna marry it. May I add that their other material (what I've heard, anyway) never did it for me.

oh yes, fire island is a great song..They had some catchy songs, to bad they never really caught on in the states...
