I have to say that I haven't had the slightest interest in listening to the single or engaging in any of the excited conversation about the new album. I'm certainly happy for those who've gotten jacked up over it all - I love when a band and their music do that for me. I thought Duran Duran were justified talents and a pleasure back in the days of Rio and the original s/t album, so I finally caved, had a listen to the single, and sat through the video. I often come around when I really give something a chance, especially if its liked by like-minded folks. I'm quite surprised then to say that it really is the shitfest that I had originally expected.

Well, since Blir let the genie out of the bottle, I will say that I like the lead single and "Blame the Machines" but the other 7 tracks are a big yawnfest. Nothing very interesting or innovative here. And yet, its better than their last offering!

How did they achieve No 1? Pent up demand for DD? Huge fan base? Marketing? All the above? I've yet to hear it on the radio and haven't really noticed an ad campaign or anything.

VH-1 Behind The Music recently broadcast a "remastered" version of their DD program. The new album was emphasized quite a bit towards the end of the program. So I would suggest that would be considered marketing.

Oh puleeze! If you admit liked their early stuff but don't like the new stuff you're being inconsistent at the least. The new stuff is JUST like the old DD. I'm no huge Duranie but even I can hear that.

Since DD is coming as close to their original sound as possible, the only reasonable explanation you don't like it is that YOUR perspective has changed.

No sin in that I'm just saying realize that this time it's not them, it's you. People evolve, tastes change, it's cool. You may still like to listen to "Rio", mainly because of all the positive memories you associate with it, but if it came out today you wouldn't like it.

I don't care too much for "All You Need Is Now" as the lead single. There are better songs on the album (I agree with zill on "Blame The Machines"). Anyone listening to just the lead single and then dismissing the rest of the album might just miss out on something good. I honestly think the album is pretty good as a whole...better than Red Carpet Massacre for sure.

Doing pretty well is Australia too.. was #2 yesterday. Good on em I say. Hopefully they will tour again. Last tour here was awesome.

"All You Need Is Now" was on VH1 Top 20 Countdown at either 19 or 20... right next to Kylie Minogue's new single "Get Outta My Way" .... the 80's are back! [:D]

Listened to the new album and it just isn't doing anything for me. It's not a return to their 80's best, it's just a mediocre album.

It's more than a return to the 80's. It's better that Rio! I cannot stop playing the damn thing. So many great songs. I haven't been this thrilled about an album for some time, and I never thought I would be thrilled again by anything with the DD name on it. And I'm no mindless Duranie just thrilled to have something new. After 1985, I couldn't be bothered... I'm very impressed, but I still think the majority of the thanks goes to Mark Ronson.

Duran Duran were a band for teenage girls (as were most new wave acts back then -- whether or not you want to admit it, that's who the labels marketed them to). When their pin-up looks faded, it was time to pack it in.

And these new songs might have been good enough to be B-sides during the "Rio" days. Then again, even the B-sides on the "Rio" album are better than this.

.. hmm I like DD.. but really... honestly speaking.. I just can't get into this latest album... doesn't do much for me at all I'm afraid. I'll keep trying for a bit.

I liked Astronaut better.. actually no.. I liked the album that Astronaut SHOULD have been better - 'Beautiful Colours' (and the less we say about RCM the better, right kids? ;-)
