RIP John Barry

Just found out that John Barry died a few days ago. He wrote the music for the early James Bond soundtracks, as well as the 'James Bond Theme' itself (not to mention tons of other movies). 'A View To A Kill' was written by him and Duran Duran. An obvious influence on Portishead. In my opinion he was the absolute master of the Killer Chord Change, an essential device in pop music.

Monty Norman wrote the original James Bond Theme. John Barry arranged it.

Well, kind of. Norman borrowed the guitar part melody from a song (Good Sign, Bad Sign) he composed for a musical. The producers were unhappy with Norman's theme and called in Barry who kept the guitar part and came up with the rest of it.

All true, but even after several back and forth lawsuits, Norman retained the sole writing and publishing rights.

Reviving an old thread here for a related (though NNNW) sub-topic... anyone catch Shirley Bassey doing 'Goldfinger' on the Oscars last night? Awesome. I don't know how old that gal is but she can still belt it out.
