I'm really curious about this New Zealand band. I searched the forum for posts but came up with no hits, which makes me think the search did not work. (The arcane new wave knowledge on here is incredible.)

Anyway, I found Mi-Sex's "Graffiti Crimes" on a new wave compilation:

My daughter and I both think this song rocks (she is 6). The beat and guitar sound are punk, and at one point the singer sounds a bit like Johnny Rotten, but the keyboards are new wavish.

Anyone know anything about this band that isn't on wikipedia?

I listened to both "Blue Day" and "Straight Laddie" and liked them. Thanks for the tips.

There's an "Essential" compilation available from Sony Australia. I like their later stuff, too, although it's more straight-ahead AOR rock - particularly "Castaway" from their "Where Do They Go?" album. Singer died in 1992.

Here's a youtube link to the original single version of 'Castaway', before it was remixed for the US. This version can only be gound on a 80's Australian pop compilation, as the US Remix version has taken it's place on all Mi-Sex compilations and the album it came from.

"Where Do They Go" was their only studio album that was consistently good. Make sure to get the U.S. pressing as Epic Records dropped all the weak songs off the original Australian version in favor of some superior non-album singles plus the only good track off of "Shanghaied" (the shitty 3rd album that they didn't even bother releasing here).

None of the songs I've heard so far rock as hard or are as funny as "Graffiti Crimes." "Computer Games" is electronica but has a good beat and a sense of humor. Sounds the band went totally pop.

Their first album caught the attention of the Pub Rock fans( Cold Chisel,Midnight Oil, The Angels,AC/DC) here in Australia. But they lost all those fans when the 2nd album came along. 'Computer Games' wasn't officially part of the 'Graffiti Games' album, as it was a bonus single that came with the LP. They had the first album curse and couldn't live up to the success of it. They were a very good band and I always liked them.

That was only the first pressing. They tacked it on later. It's on my copy -- and not as a bonus single.

Epic Records in the U.S. always included it. They named the whole album after it, so.... it was probably a good idea to have it on there.

MiSex got their name from the Ultravox song "My Sex".
I saw them twice & thought they were a good rock band with a little electronic influence.In 1980,their songs were clearly influenced by the Ultravox/Numan futuristic thing.They had a few radio hits in 79/80...But You Don't Care,People,Space Race,Computer Games & Blue Day in 84 (still a great song).
I'd say that MiSex are remembered here with great fondness. Their songs are still played often in my local area.

Nothin' beats New Wave ...
