Would you consider Depeche Mode new wave?

I would say YES, YES YES. Even if their later stuff was not really new wave, I still think they're a new wave band because they were one of the main groups that started the genre.

Their later stuff wasn't new wave, so they are dead to me.

Ever ask a stupid question mimzy?

You just did.

I can see plagiarism's point and I have no problem with it.
That's how I feel about u2, after the joshua twig. After too
much airplay for such a lame album, I purged my collection of
all their earlier stuff. They are dead to me.

Plagiarism, I'm not sure if you were being facetious with your reply. But, if not, I'll add mine.

I'm the same way about The Cure. All was good until "hot Robert" became "fat Robert". That's when they died for me.

I know it sounds like a dumb question but I've actually heard people insist DM are NOT new wave. which to me is like saying Tupac is not hip hop

Tupac is dead. Let's get over this over-rated mediocre talent and keep him out of a legitimate new wave discussion. It has no place here.

Next thing you know you'll be saying Midnight Star, Robyn, and Lights don't belong here. What in the name of Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam are smoking?!

They're kind of hard to categorize. Like A-ha, their earlier stuff is pure synthpop but they incorporated much more prominent non-synthesized instruments in their later works. I just call them synthpop (Pretty dark synthpop at times, mind you) and be done with it. For me, new wave had more guitar presence than they had, like Duran Duran and The Fixx. The Mode were much for synth orientated.
But, hey, new wave is such an umbrella term, you decide! Its different for everyone : D
