Were Any New Wave Bands Really New Wave

Ultimately, it's really something subjective based on individual preferences and different people are likely to have their own definition. Personally, I think of it as upbeat, fun, and more synthesized than other styles of music. I'm also an anti-fan of the bubble-gum, soft rock style of music that a lot of people consider to be new wave.
Posted: Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:00 pmAs Pellerman says this is a Pandora's Box of a question as the definition is fluid and therefore so are the answers. I would agree that a defining characteristic of the music is fun, though.
In my definition I would says there were very few new wave bands to come from here, the only ones that immediately spring to mind are The Lonely Boys, Horizontal Brain, The Mobiles and The Doll.

I was also very surprised when none of my NWOBHM favorites were being discussed here....what's up with that?! [:p]

The two prominent instruments in New Wave are a synthesizer and a guitar. If you are lacking those, your band likely is not New Wave.
There also is a style and outlook associated with New Wave, which leads to observations that you "know it when you hear it."

But then again there are a LOT Of Genre that are distinctively New Wave'ish.. Goth (the Cure), Early Industrial (Joy Division), SynthPop (Dmode, Kraftwerk, OMD,) Modern Romantics (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet)
