Yes, take a song and have 1000 remixes of it to the point where there's literally nothing left of it.

I'm listening to what might be the 80th remix of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's "Love Missile F1-11".

I think I figured out how this song works. Take the simple synth melody, have random soundbytes play every 4 seconds, and um, slap the unchanged lyrics onto it.

Okay, I think that now covers a good deal of SSS's songs.

Sure, artists can't control what other people do with their music(ie remixes), but I'm suspecting SSS encouraged the dilution of their 1 notable hit.

In the 90s, there was a Brian Eno CD single here in the US that had TEN remixes of "Fractal Zoom" on it.

Great track, although not all the mixes were that good. Funny you brought it up, since I listened to the CD (the entire disc!) just a few days ago.

Oh man, "Enjoy the Silence" has been remixed AND covered into oblivion. And everyone who covers it always wants to change the melody. The only version I've heard that is even close to being loyal to the original melody is Lacuna Coil's version but they skewer it with their nu-metal horseshit.

for whatever reason I almost always prefer the original versions to the (usually club play) remixes ... the only exception that immediately jumps to mind is the restructure remix of a certain ratio's "shack up." And usually I prefer the original version to re-recorded versions (for example the bad re-recorded Flock of Seagulls hits). there are exceptions here, too: i like the version of "temptation" on the trainspotting soundtrack best.

Dunno. Guess I'm usually in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school.

But some cases, I see the 12" as the full version, and the 7"/album version as an edit (eg. New Order's The Perfect Kiss).

If a song is even remixed once-it's been remixed into oblivion for me.
Nothing worse than a remix--leave em alone.
