Katrina Leskanich, former lead singer of Katrina & The Waves:

"As the singer of 'Walking on Sunshine' I don't endorse its use by Michele Bachmann's presidential campaign. I've performed ‘Walking on Sunshine’ for so many years in so many different countries that it’s become the one constant in my life and the one thing I can count on to bring happiness to myself and others. The song is used in commercials and movies as a vehicle for a feel good moment or empowerment but if I disagree with the policies, opinions or platforms for its use, I've no choice but to try and defend the song and prevent its misuse. Music can be both powerful and moving and sometimes even a little dangerous."

I'm sure defending the song to prevent it's misuse includes NOT cashing the fat royalty checks that roll in when it is used in a manner that offends Katrina's delicate political sensibilities.

Wiki says: "The song is very popular in commercials and advertisers typically pay $150,000 to $200,000 per year to use the song."

Haven't heard Kat make a peep when it is used by a paying advertiser whose policies, products or political outlook doesn't agree with hers. Perhaps she could open her next show with a cover of "Money Changes Everything".

Ergo their defense of the likely loyalty-less playing of it by some cunt they don't agree with. What's your point?

Point is Katrina is a cash hungry hypocrite who, while feigning indignation at the "misuse" of her music, is actually whoring her "art" for profit and whose own political views are easily ignored if the price is right.

No comments on the point that the campaign was using 29 seconds of the Tom Petty song? Doesn't 30 seconds constitute a performance, thus requiring royalties?

Wrapping yourself in someone else's work for self-gain doesn't strike me as the right thing to do. I don't care what the politics are.

People have the right to sell their work to whomever they choose.

If a group whose views are the polar opposite of yours starts using your work without your consent, then you should have the right to tell them to fuck off.

I don't get djcraigs point. Are you saying by "whoring their art" they are breaking the rules of whatever political group they DO side with? Democrat or whatever.

I'll vote for anyone who doesn't use that crap song. I never need to hear it again. It's in every romantic comedy movie trailer as it is. It's poison.

So you're saying Katrina wholeheartedly agrees with the political bent, policies and actions of every entity that has paid her to use her song?

Ripping Bachmann is just convenient because it is economically feasible. If by doing so it actually substantially reduced the amount of revenue Katrina received, I doubt she'd be so vehement.

As I'm sure you do to anyone who holds opinions that conflict with your own.

I do take exception to your statement, though. I happen to love fags.
