There will always be a soft spot in my heart for REM. Their early stuff was so great and although I don't listen to them often anymore, it's weird to think that they will no longer be around. Not too many 80s bands left.

Hard to believe they formed in 1980--31 years!

My all-time favorite band. Feeling a little pensive today. Listening to their early releases always seems to bring back memories of the times.

Two things...

1. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.

2. Not new wave. Moderators, please put this thread in an appropriate section. Thanks in advance.

Now had you stayed a moderator Frau , you could have taken matters into your own hands. Just saying. [;)]

Not New Wave but they were huge to the 80's college rock scene. Arguably bigger than the Pixies in those circles. They should have realized that their best days were behind them and just taken victory laps with "greatest hits" tours like every other 80's band rather than put out new stuff that nobody noticed.
I'd love to know who they pissed off so much to be shunned by the Americana Rock scene like they've been for the past 20 years. Wilco are held up as Christ figures while the guys who built the blueprint are barely acknowledged. You'd have thought that grey- haired pony-tailed granola eaters who read No Depression would have put up a statue to them by now...but nope. Strange.

Although they were one of my all-time favorites and actually have put out a decent album or two lately, they have basically been dead to me for a long time already so I agree with #1. Some dreadful records in their later catalog.

Then again. maybe this means that Peter, Bill and Scott can devote more time to being Robyn Hitchcock's band The Venus 3?
