With as shitty as the world is right now, I think it is an ideal time for new wave to come back with a vengeance. We need happy music that is not deep, hell we have enough problems to deal with and fashion needs a real kick in the ass!!

Quite honestly, I think we are having one of the most fun, colorful, and upbeat periods in music that we have in years in terms of pop radio. The 90s were fricking dark and depressing, and in the 2000s, other than an awesome underground 80s-influenced revival that got mostly no airplay, pop music and pop personas were indistinct and forgettable.

Dude, the 80s revival was soooo 2009. We're recycling the 90s now, especially shoegaze. Keep up!!!

Dudes, the '80s revival was soooo 2000. You've never heard of Adult? But whether it's '80s revivalism or '90s revivalism, the problem with it all is that the youngsters are just aping the sounds of yesteryear. Over fifty fucking years of rock-n-roll history to build on, and what do we have today? Cut Copy... She & Him... LCD Soundsystem... all fucking rubbish. We don't need a NW revival, we don't need a shoegaze revival, we need something truly new.

Around 2003, dozens of "New Wavey" bands all seemed to emerge at once; Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Hot Hot Heat, Futureheads, etc. Sadly, Linkin Park outsold them all.

Of the current "New Wave" influenced bands, they all seem to put out an album in 2010; Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, National, LCD Soundsystem, Phoenix, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, etc. Bands these days seem to be on a "3 year" cycle, so I don't expect much good stuff before 2013.

What happened to the days when Elvis Costello put out a masterpiece every year?

I agree with DougMash but I doubt those new albums are going to harken back to New Wave. I think the revival is over. It seemed to have flamed out around 2008. Now Indie/Aletrnative/whatever is doing what it always does when it's in a state of flux: churning out garage bands that never become "the next big thing", 60's retreads (ENOUGH ALREADY!!) and minimalist dance music.

I would not call Rihanna, Kate Perry, Justin Bieber and Keisha "fun, colorful and upbeat." Right now is probably the worst period of radio music EVER! The fact that someone like Adele is considered top notch is laughable to me. She's terribly overrated but has so much critical acclaim because the bar is so low right now.

Seconded... right up to the part about Rihanna. That 'We Found Love' song is pretty frickin' catchy. I hate to admit it even to myself, but what the hell, I like it.

compared to US commercial music market of 90's, today is more fun....in the 90's and even 2000's it was mostly R&B/Rap and Grunge/Post Grunge, and today there's a lot of Electro/Dance, so I think it is more fun and upbeat..

I guess every decade is good in its way, and I sort of miss that Soul/R&B and House of 90's, but I do agree with budaniel that today is a bit more fun and upbeat

I'll have to agree again with this sentiment. Music of today makes me think of Don McClean's "American Pie". It's truly the day that music died. I'm sure there are plenty of great bands out there, but their music is not being played on today's mainstream, corporate radio. The only thing "colorful" in today's music scene is Lady Gaga's face.
