New Wave or Heavy metal?

This may be a "well Duh" topic, but I was at another forum, and the had a topic of who had more impact: New Wave or Hair Metal? intrestingly enough, you could tell who was New Wave and who was Hair Metal. One side was insisting that their side "rocked harder" and the other side insisted they "sounded better". just thought i'd post this. very interesting to me...

No doubt you should be expecting biased answers [:D]. To me hair metal was Led Zeppelin heavy metal dressed-up and amp-up to a comical degree. I think you just have to look around at the bands today and listen to who they're saying their influences were.

Back in '82 or '83, in either NME or Melody Maker, there was an interview with a heavy metal kid who was asked, "Is there such thing as bad heavy metal?" to which he responded, "yeah, it's called New Wave!"

Hair Metal was like some huge, ellaborate joke that even it's most rabid fans didn't seem to be in on.
