San Diego was an interesting mix back in the 80's. I grew up in So. Cal., and moved around a bit growing up. San Diego had a New Wave & Punk crowd, but the surf/trendy crowd was also into New Wave music. It was not uncommon to come from the beach during the day to the clubs at night. Great vintage video! Hard to believe it's considered vintage now. [:0]

;] So did I. San Diego was a lot like L.A. in that the surfers were into hardcore punk rock AND new wave. In fact the entire south bay(Hermosa Beach/Redondo Beach) and Orange County was pretty much hardcore punks and new wave teens mixed in. A lot of my sisters friends were incredibly hot looking girls that were into the hardcore beach punk bands like Tsol, D.I., the vandals, etc. and also new wave stuff like Berlin, Missing Persons, the Go Gos, Billy Idol. etc. It was pretty funny.

Yeah, the beach communitites gravitated towards the scene. [8D] Though, it seemed to me that more mainstreamers were listening to New Wave & Punk in San Diego than Orange County. It seemed a bit more underground in OC. Could be that divide in the 80's though too. The early and mid years (the better years when NW was still in heavy radio rotation) had a different feel than the end of the 80's.

Ahh nope, San Diego was definitely late to the game and had a very small scene, especially when it came to hardcore punk(which was created in OC circa 78'). And by 81 new wave was well merged into O.C. and south bay scenes. That's why you had hardcore punk bands changing up their styles completely. They didn't want to stay stagnant. They also had to change because clubs in OC started banning hardcore bands. Cuckoos nest, etc.
