I actually think Kajagoogoo is a great name. It's so absurd that it's brilliant.
I like Haysi Fantyazee, too.

I like ones with the "in" references:
Heaven 17 from A Clockwork Orange
Joy Division from House of Dolls
Duran Duran from Barbarella
UB40 from the welfare form
Level 42 from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
There must be a million of these...

First one that comes to mind for me is "Camper Van Beethoven" ! I've listened to them since the early 80's and never had a clue as to the origin of their name. I need to let my fingers do the walkin' on the keyboard and search the net.

I didn't care much for the band but i though "Save Ferris" was a cool name seeing as how that was written on that girls notebook on the bus. Not New Wave but Steely Dan got their name while in a porn shop in England somewhere, there was a chrome dildo called The Steely Dan, another sidenote Chevy Chase was the origional drummer for Steely Dan. [:D]

I'm going with post-new wave "XTC" as my favorite name, but not as a drug reference.

It's an anagram of his last name: Chris Hamill.

I always liked XTC's Andy Partridge's side project 'Dukes of The Stratosphere'
Has a sort of Jules Verne, Neo-industrial age flavor about it [:D]

That's not all true. They got their name from William Burroughs' 1959 book Naked Lunch, in which a dildo is named "Steely Dan III from Yokohama."

Similarily the band 10cc took their name from the average amount of fluid produced by the male orgasm.

I always thought some of the one-hit wonders came up with cool names:
B-Movie
Quando Quango
Q-Feel
However, Ultravox was always my favorite...

Echo And The Bunnymen
Psychedelic Furs
Yaz or Yazoo (whichever you prefer!)
Thompson Twins (what do you mean there not twins they look so much a like!)
Cool names = cool groups
