Im sorry.. I had to say Gary Numan - Cars..
I love Numans works nearly all of it..
And his music will always be there to be awesome for me...even when I am alone.

I gotta agree with "Cars" by Gary Numan. It was probably the first song that hooked me into the new wave scene in the early 80's.

No question in my mind: Doot Doot by Freur. The song was unique in structure, instrumentation and lyrics. There was no mistaking it for anything other than new wave.
Cars by Gary Numan a close second.

I feel like a sheep,....I voted for Cars. it is ABSOLUTELY the eptiome of NW music.
Although my vote REALLY goes to "I Ran", by AFOS. That totally brings all the sound right back!

I voted for "Whip It". Whether you like it or not, it almost perfectly encapsulates the many facets of new wave with synths, guitars, post-punk quirkiness ... and it came out in 1980, which places it neatly in the early-yet-middle of the period.

Although I love almost all of these songs, I would have to agree with Mike P. that "Whip It" by Devo is the song that most embodies New Wave-synth, great offbeat lyrics, cool style.
