Early 80s new wave look

Postby WeLiveSoFastx83 » Mon Feb 24, 2020 10:53 pm

I noticed that David Bowie (on the cover of Scary Monsters...), Hazel O'Connor (on the cover of Cover Plus) and Mick Karn (on the cover of Titles) are all donning white face paint and orange, reddish hair. What inspired this look, and did anyone else appropriate this look?

If I remember correctly it's a Marlene Dietrich thing.
She's known as a gender-bending icon.

Of course there is Annie Lennox.

At least one member of every early New Romantic band

A lesser known Ronny.

Clearly a mark of an outsider. There's a big tradition of seeing red-head people as an outkasts, so in post-punk there's a clear wish to align themselves with outkasts. Besides it's a striking, somewhat alien look - what better for a scene built on striking looks :D

When Duran Duran were starting out Nick Rhodes didn't so much have red hair as orange hair, in a huge, mushroom cloud hairdo.
