Any thoughts on Tony Carey's pet project "Planet P"? Yeah , I know it is not new wave but it was still great 80's music. I'm particularly fond of Planet P's second effort , "Pink World". Anyone else?

I liked a lot of his stuff, including his solo material -- good AOR-new wave crossover material.

I still have that album fortunately.It was very good along with the long version of "Why me" that was rarely played on the radio.I found it a long time ago on Napster.

I've always loved "Why Me"....at the time, I realized it wasn't exactly New Wave, but I thought it was cool nevertheless...it did have that zoomy/ synthy sort of feel; even the guitars were space-agey. In fact, I thought that A Flock of Seagulls would've been right at home performing that one, or even Duran, Yaz, or Psychedelic Furs. I had it on a scratchy old cassette for years before I finally found it on kazaa a while back.

wow! The other day I saw a very cheap lp of this band in a second hand record shop, but I did not pick it because I had no idea what it could be! It looked very 80s, that's true. But I had had a bad experience with a canadian or NY band (not sure) called Rough Trade, that looked also very 80s but sounded like a crossover between hard rock and synths... The record was called something about Freud... Do you know them? does Planet P Project sound the same?

it's definitely rock--but composed very well ! Just an all around good album.Go to Win MX and see if you can get if anything a partial download of some of the tunes to sample to give you an idea.

I downloaded both of their (his) albums last year ("Planet P" is Tony Carey of Rainbow fame). I also have the videos for "Why Me" and "Static", both of which are very cool in that early '80s way. "Static" is very reminiscent of something from "The Wall" in its presentation.

These albums seem to have somewhat of a cult following. Interesting stuff, but not the kind of thing I listen to often.

Tony Carey's "I Won't Be Home Tonight" is another excellent album--if you can find it.

[/quote] The album is by a Canadian band and it's called Avoid Freud. A great new wave album. more new wave than synth pop that a lot think is what new wave was all about.

In the early 80's there seemed to be a small contingent of "classic rockers" trying to go new wave. "Living On The Edge" by Jim Capaldi immediately springs to mind along with Planet P and Neil Young's "Transformer" album.

Why Me... awesome 80's classic... and Planet P's first album is great too. I never heard "Pink World" though

I also like Tony's -Fine Fine day... though I'm not too familiar with his other work

Always enjoyed Planet P and the wealth of solo Toney Carey CD's. Recently came across some very early Toney Carey as well as a CD of unreleased Planet P material - I think it may have been an indie release via Toney himself?? Not sure, but they were only $5.95 each and I scooped. Carey has some really fantastice solo stuff IMO. I've mangae to get the Planet P's on CD and quite a few of the solo CD releases over the years.

I still have the solid pink vinyl for the LP that was released in the 80s, Pink World.

The pink vinyl was classic--wish I still had it.[V]
