Based purely on voice alone my personal favorite has to be Alison Moyet from Yaz and her solo works. The woman could sing the phone book and have it be entertaining. Anyone else have others to add?

I have to second the motion on Midge Ure.

Also, Simon Lebon has remarkable range and control.

The singer from King (don't know name) always struck me as having above average vocal abilities.

I can't single out one but these are my Hall of Famers

Jimmy Sommerville- Absolutely amazing soprano voice, the most recognizable male voice in the genre.

Iva Davies- Has a voice to make even a dude swoon.(Ie: 'No Promises')

Marc Almond- Who can forget that haunting voice of 'Tainted Love'?

Annie Lennox- IMO The most captivating female voice and presence in NW

Alison Moyet- (Most definitely another great voice of female NW)

Kate Pearson- What a vocal range! Can even make a flat note pleasant to hear.(ever try to sing along and stay on key?)

Sinead O'Connor- Despite the bad rap, there is no denying her brilliant vocal talent (Don't believe me? give 'The Lion and The Cobra' another listen)

Sarah McLachlan - Though a late comer to the genre, in early '88 she B l e w M e A w a y with her gorgeous debut single 'Vox'. That song is still my fave from her.

Enya- (I know she's more Nu Age) but boy did she plenty of airplay on WLIR! Gorgeous celtic siren

I gotta go Peter Murphy here...the power in his voice is amazing...(but on the Alison Moyet front, I could listen to 'Invisible' all day...)

Pure talent. Hmmm....Gonna go with Kate Bush for an unbelievable octave range. Annie Lennox of course had amazing pipes. Nina Hagen also had that demented muppet show/opera thing going on. They guys would probably be Klaus Nomi and Feargal Sharkey.

... but I also personally love that strikingly distinctive voices of Trevor Tanner (Bolshoi), and Andrew Eldritch (SoM)...

I agree with all of the above.

I would like to add Ian McCulloch from Echo & the Bunnymen for best male....Annie Lennox best female.

Right on, Edison. I don't know how I over looked Ian McCulloch: distictive, strong and passionate.
