New Wave Artists Who Make Only One Good Album:

Why is it that there are some New Wave artists who happen to make only one good or great album,and then anything after is just filler and way too commercial and boring? For instance I love the very first "Talk Talk" album with the self titled hit,but anything else after that album, seemed to be nothing like that first album.Granted that "It's My Life" was still a very good song,but the rest of that album was nothing like that.It was all slow and watered down pop.It wasn't even what I would call New Wave anymore,and follow-up albums were all the same after that.

The same can be said about "Tears For Fears" and their first album "The Hurting" Anything else after that album they sold out and were just never the same ever again.Here are some other artists who I felt started out with alot of potential,but then just lost it entirely,either after their first album,or their second.Listed are the artists and their one good album.As well as artists who I don't think were really any good from the start.If anyone cares to add to this list,please feel free to do so.

Go West-The first album with "We Close Are Eyes" Call Me,and Don't Look Down.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood-Welcome To The Pleasuredome.What a great classic album all around.This album was good from the beginning,all the way to the end.Sad to say,but it puts their second album "Liverpool" to shame all around.There was not one song I liked off of "Liverpool" and the songs were way to slow,and not upbeat like Pleasuredome was.What happened after the first album? Did they all of a sudden get writer's cramp so fast? It seemed so.

I hope I don't catch hell for this next one,because so many people seemed to like this next group,and for the life of me,I could never figure out why.Not like I ever listened to any of their albums,to judge them,then just on the one hit that they had,but the hit was bad enough,that I could tell right off the bat,from just their style alone,that I would not like them.But to me I never felt that The Dream Academy was any good.And to me I never considered it to be New Wave,in any way,shape, or form.If anything "Life In A Northern Town" sounded like a folk ballad.And not a very good one at that either.

The same can be said of The Cutting Crew.I never felt that they had any potential either.Just by my posts you are able to tell,that I like my New Wave music,to be upbeat,and not very slow,and watered down.I like music that I can dance to and pogo to,and I can't see anyone dancing to The Cutting Crew at all.I also normally under most circumstances,don't like really top 40 commercial New Wave either,unless it's a band or an artist that I really like alot.

Men At Work-Business As Usual.As much as I didn't really care for these guys as a whole.Their first album as much of a classic that it is,I still like this album,but anything else after,except for a few songs here and there,was just not my cup of tea.

Hipsway-The first one with "The Honeytheif" and Ask The Lord was such a great album,that I wanted to hear more from them.They reminded me alot of The Simple Minds style in the voclas department.And just recently more was what I got from these guys,and boy I am sure glad that I didn't buy that second album of theirs from 1989,because it was very bad.And nothing like that first album.


A-Ha.After 3 great albums in a row,they decided to go off in an entirely different direction altogether,and that is when I stopped buying their music.From excellent New Wave,to heavy metal on their 4th album,and then from then on,it was all slow all ballads.

Howard Jones-Again the first 3 albums in a row were all great,but then he decided I guess he wanted to become more like the Billy Joel of pop.All slow ballads after the first 3 albums.

Thomas Dolby-The very first album was a great classic.But then the 2nd one was very mellow,and alot more slower.Thomas seemed like he was on a huge downhill and very fast,and way too soon.Then everything else after that first album. It wasn't until 10 years later,that he finally got back on the New Wave bandwagon again, and boy was I in for a surprise,because come 1992 his "Astronauts and Heretics" was just as great as his very first album.And very much upbeat,as I like my New Wave to be.

Right now,I really can't think of any others,but I'm sure when I am more awake I will come up with some other names,but for now this will do.

Ebn Ozn comes to mind, but then they only made the one album.

Men Without Hats... "Rhythm Of Youth" is solid front to back. Their subsequent albums had good songs interspersed between utter schlock.

Thoms Dolby: His 1st album was pure magic. His 1984 release was awful. Don't even want to try Aliens ate my Buick.

I only liked AEIOU from EBN-OZN. The rest of the album consists of them playing around with voice changers, and failing.

"Scott Wilk & The Walls" was a one hit wonder album - & a good one at that IMO. How about "The Sherbs" couple albums? Great stuff - don't know what ever happened to them. "Wall of Voodoo" had some GREAT albums also - I liked ALL their songs.
