Best NW band Bass Player

Someone in the Japan thread mentioned Mick Karn, and I was re-reminded of what an incredible bass player he is. His brillant (un) fret work made much of Japan's (and Dalis Car's etc) sound possible. Which begs the question: Who do you think were/are the outstanding technical or imagnative bass players in NW?

John Taylor (Duran Duran)

Mark Lickley (ABC bassist on The Lexicon of Love)
David J (Love and Rockets)
Honorable mention: Les Claypool--I know not NW, but Damn what a bass player

the bassist for Simple Minds
the session bassist that plays on "I, Assassin" by Gary Numan
Mick Karn is clearly above all though I think.
I'm glad someone mentioned REM's bass work, it's really overlooked sometimes.
