Kinda dumb question re "Dub"

Was reading a book on the Clash and saw repeated references to "dub" or "Jamaican dub." I would probably recongize this style if I heard it but I don't know a definition would be. Can anyone 'splain and give some examples?

Me, I love dub. I think of it as "really heavy reggae". My fave in this genre is the group Dub Syndicate. When you listen to it, it's heavy, bassy, "thick", distorted reggae beats. The instrumentation in dub is mixed and he
