Thrill Jockey signs Tom Verlaine

NEW YORK -- Thrill Jockey has signed Television singer/guitarist Tom Verlaine, whose label debut is expected in early 2006. In the meantime, Thrill Jockey is planning a fall reissue of Verlaine's 1992
instrumental album, "Warm and Cool," originally released by Rykodisc.

"Warm and Cool" finds the artist backed by Television bassist Fred
Smith and drummer Billy Ficca, as well as Patti Smith Band drummer Jay
Dee Daugherty and bassist Patrick A. Derivaz. It was released a few
months before Television's self-titled comeback album for Capitol.

The original 14-track album will be expanded with eight bonus tracks that comprise improvised "pieces that could have been much longer but for me had a charm being brief," Verlaine says in the liner notes.

Television has a handful of European dates on calendar this summer, including appearances next week at the Patti Smith-curated Meltdown Festival in London.

Television's Tom Verlaine Announces Solo LP, Reissue

Looks like someone finally refilled the Ritalin prescription, as according to a recent press release from Thrill Jockey, long-dormant Television string-dazzler Tom Verlaine has recently signed with the indie label, and is currently prepping a new solo disc for release next year. While details are still coming together for the upcoming album-- his first solo outing since 1992's Warm and Cool-- we're assured that an early 2006 street date is likely.

In the meantime, Verlaine's first release for Thrill Jockey will be an expanded reissue of Warm and Cool, that will feature the original 14-track album along with eight additional bonus cuts. And while not an alt-rock classic in the vein of Marquee Moon or anything, the album's low key instrumental-only tracks (supported by Television's Fred Smith and Billy Ficca) are a definite draw for those in love with Verlaine's melodic noodling. Speaking of the expansion in the press release, Verlaine shed some light on the newly unearthed bonus material. "These are some little bits from here and there and this year and other years dumped into a computer. I tried to edit out the mistakes but wasn't always able to. Anyway, it got boring even trying to do that. There's a lot of imperfections, mistakes like maybe wobbly tempo or out-of-tune strings here and there...timing errors."

And just a quick reminder to the Strokes as they finish mixing their third LP-- a reunited Television will be ripe for lick-pilfering as they finish up a handful of live dates throughout Europe this summer, including a set at Belgium's Dour Festival (which also sees performances from Bright Eyes, Liars, Roots Manuva, and the Blues Explosion).
