Ok, so I've been listening to an 80's internet radio station at work and they play a wide mix of everything...but it's a Canadian station, and they kept playing all of these songs I'd never heard, then it hit me....they're Canadian 80's bands!

I tested this theory and it turns out for the most part I was right, most of the bands I'd never heard of were Canadian bands that turned out to be really cool (by 80's standards.)

Here's a few bands I heard that I was previously unaware of:

Doug & The Slugs
The Arrows
Gowan
Saga
Frozen Ghost
Harlequin
Haywire

I really liked almost all of what I heard, I was surprised I'd never heard of these bands. I did a bit of research, and in addition to a few Canadian artists I was aware of already like; Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, and Kick Axe (a.k.a Spectre General [}:)]) I learned that two other artists I liked were Canadian. These were Tim Feehan, and everyone's favorite...........Corey Hart!

So those of you who were around in the 80's who are the 80's artists you liked? For those of you who ARE Canadian, what can you reccommend?

Maybe try Jane Siberry? I've heard a song or two by her. Lovely voice, she has.

um, does 80s industrial count? There's always those wacky funsters Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly [:D]

I really like Harlequin..they're kind of power poppish (is that a word?). Do you rememebr the track? Innocence? Thinking of You?

Speaking personally, I think that Spoons really didn't get the respect they deserved in the USA. I never heard of them until about 5 years ago. Nova Heart is a classic, but they had a few dozen other great songs. Collectable Spoons is a great introduction.

Yeah, they played The Spoons too. The station was CRIK - The Lynx, I found it in Windows Media player since that's what's available at work. They have a Disco channel too. [:D]

The Spoons are largely overlooked, even though they wrote some great songs. Also I Like:
Men Without Hats
Figures on a Beach
Eight Seconds
Martha and the Muffins
Rough Trade
Kon Kan
The Kings

Although not NW, I'm a big Saga fan. Worlds Apart is a great album.

Jane Siberry has some wonderful songs, and many frustratingly artsy songs.

Among her best: Bound by the Beauty, One More Colour, Mimi On the Beach, Life is the Red Wagon, Hockey, Everything Reminds Me of My Dog, Temple.

I couldn't compare her to anyone, her style is pretty diverse, ranging from new agey to folk to country influenced to something entirely her own sound.

I'll dig out my cds and upload them.

So I just bought a CD of a Canadian Band. "Nature of the Beast" by April Wine. It's rocky, but not bad.

She also comes across like a space cadet during interviews, but she is apparently quite intelligent. I remember her once being asked about the cows she used in a video, her response was "I like cows, I think they're underrated." That's either deep...or spacey.

Platinum Blonde may have been poppy sellouts (but they did have some good catchy songs). Trying out the search feature here, them as well as other Canadian bands have been mentioned in past threads. (has it all been said and done?)

In allmusic.com you could 'explore by country'. FYI, I didn't know Paul Anka, Klaatu, Hot Hot Heat and Diana Krall where Canadian.

More along the lines of Saga was FM who spawned Nash The Slash-(the guy that always appears wrapped up in bandages).BB Gabor was born in Hungary but he moved to Canada where he recorded a few quirky albums. Images In Vogue was a new romantic-ish band who had some pretty decent stuff.

Rough Trade, Moev & Skinny Puppy were all excellent groups, although hardly interchangeable stylewise.
