It used to be slang (still is??) in the UK for tennis shoes. Maybe because they wore black pants, skinny ties, and, taddah!...tennis shoes?

But that's also plimsoll, myirwin. I think maybe they changes "soll" to "soul", much like the Beatles did with their name (from beetles)? Just a thought.
